When it comes to holiday events, if you build it, they will come—and leave happier.

Those of us in catering and events intuitively know this to be true. As we see at the catered events we support with catering equipment and rentals—especially during the holiday season—bringing together teams, communities, small groups and families helps to strengthen bonds and support well-being.

But did you know there’s research that proves the importance of face-to-face connection? My company, Element Event Solutions, discovered the data behind the theory after we partnered with GenWell, Canada’s human connection movement.

The implications are enormous. In our families, it can mean the difference between despair and renewed dignity, between physical distress and balanced health. In workplaces, the research underscores the importance of communication and relationships in promoting engagement, loyalty and professional growth. For our team, it confirms what we see every day—intentional, in-person events play an important role in strengthening social bonds and promoting the well-being of those in attendance.

“Employees perform better when they have a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging is heightened when companies take time to celebrate in the form of gatherings and corporate holiday parties, among other things,” says Pete Bombaci, president of GenWell. “Behind every screen, closed door and ordinary day, there’s a person who matters. Events like these convey that in ways that words simply cannot—and the benefits are long-lasting.”

In May 2025, the team at Houston-based A Fare Extraordinaire took their talents on the road to cater this 471-guest wedding for Paige Drummond and David Andersen. The celebration took place against the sweeping backdrop of the bride’s family ranch—recognizable to fans of the Food Network’s The Pioneer Woman, hosted by Paige’s mom, Ree.

For caterers hired for a complex wedding away from their home base, the team at A Fare Extraordinaire offers the following pointers:

- Master the logistics early
- Assemble the right team—near and far

The story of Dallas-based Vestals Catering begins like many meaningful meals do—with a charming backyard party that grew beyond the picket fence.

In 2008, Jordan and Emily Swim launched Food Creates Community, a grassroots dinner series they hosted in the backyard of their Texas home. With long tables under string lights and seasonal menus thoughtfully curated, the couple invited friends, neighbors and curious guests to slow down and truly savor a meal.

That ethos still drives the now-thriving catering brand. Rebranded as Vestals Catering, the company has grown into a top Texas caterer. Vestals’ headquarters in Dallas is home to 26 full-time employees and 50-plus part-time staffers, while its offices in Fort Worth and Austin employ 23 additional staff members. A partnership with Timberview Farmstead ensures that menus feature locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Meanwhile, Vestals continues to grow with the addition of Vestals Fresh, a pick-up platters and boxed lunches concept that brings chef-crafted meals to effortless gatherings, and Room 1403, an intimate private event space that embodies the brand’s signature hospitality within a refined, residential setting.

Long before he stepped into Le Cordon Bleu in France, Ken Barrett-Sweet’s culinary journey began in Alabama with a simple recipe: one wise grandmother and a set of well-worn pots and pans.

As Barrett-Sweet grew, the land around him shaped his palate. The family farm stretched across miles of Alabama soil, rows of vegetables ripening under the Southern sun. He’d gather them in the afternoons, pretending to host a cooking show from the fields.

Today, Barrett-Sweet serves as vice president of catering at The Catered Affair in Boston, a role he’s held for seven years.

His food is a melding of heritage and technique—Southern soul interpreted through a French lens. It’s a legacy stirred with a wooden spoon, simmered in tradition and served with soul.

“There’s something comforting about it,” he says. “Even Michelin-starred chefs are returning to their roots. People crave nostalgia, warmth—memory on a plate.”

A visionary in venue development, Barrett-Sweet has played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of The Catered Affair, which has been a beloved staple in the Boston area for 44 years. His most recent project was spearheading the ambitious launch of Folio at the Boston Athenaeum in 2024.

“Modeled after the ambiance and service of European bistros, Folio offers distinct hospitality in unexpected ways,” he explains. “Guests enjoy craft cocktails, a unique wine list and made-to-order shareable plates. It’s quickly become a favorite gathering spot for the curious.”

With Folio, Barrett-Sweet has helped The Catered Affair create a year-round destination for social connection through book clubs, author talks, concerts, exhibitions and more.

“Boston has plenty of cafés and large restaurants, but we were missing that perfect in-between spot, a place to pop in for a few bites and drinks before the theater or after work. At Folio, you can linger over two or three plates, enjoy a cocktail or two, and continue on your way. C’est la vie.”

In October 2024, Constellation Culinary Group catered a Día de los Muertos–themed Halloween celebration at Miami Beach’s Temple House. The client, a financial services company, wanted the event to encourage cross-team mingling, build informal connections and integrate culturally diverse teams into Miami’s community—while educating guests on Mexican traditions, which are a vital part of the city’s identity.

Menu Highlights: With chefs and attendants guiding each station, guests were encouraged to interact, ask questions and customize their meals. This participatory format naturally encouraged mingling, aligning with the client’s goal of building connections across teams.

Décor Details: Constellation partnered with Gilded Group Décor to deliver an altar-inspired, richly layered design that combined cultural symbolism with festivity. Lighting and sound from The Temple House elevated the energy, with the venue’s 360-degree projection mapping system displaying vivid Dia de Los Muertos- and Mexico-themed images.

Takeaway Tips for Planners: For planners considering their own Día de los Muertos or Halloween event, Constellation recommends:

- Design with intention Partner with creative vendors to build ambiance rooted in cultural tradition.

- Make food interactive Live cooking and chef-led demos create education and entertainment in one.

- Tell a story through flavor Authentic dishes with heritage elevate the theme.

- Think visually Stations and dishes should double as décor and social content.

- Encourage engagement Staffed stations prompt conversation, mingling and cultural learning.
