THE MORNING AFTER OUR WEDDING, MY HUSBAND SLAPPED ME—BY LUNCH, HIS FAMILY WAS FIGHTING OVER WHO WOULD GO TO PRISON FIRST
Part 1: The Blue Folder
The slap happened at 9:17 on the morning after my wedding.
I remember the time because the antique clock in the Vance dining room chimed once just as my husband’s hand hit my face.
One second, I was standing beside the breakfast table holding a coffee pot.
The next, my cheek was burning.
And Julian Vance was staring at me like he couldn't believe he'd actually done it.
Neither could I.
Not because I thought he was incapable of it.
That was the worst part.
Somewhere deep down, I think I had been waiting to find out.
The Vance family lived in a huge old house outside Greenwich, Connecticut. The kind with black gates, security cameras, and portraits of dead relatives glaring down from the walls.
At breakfast that morning, his mother, Victoria, criticized the eggs.
His sister, Claire, criticized my dress.
His father, Malcolm, criticized the fact that I had answered back.
Apparently, being married into the family for less than twelve hours meant I was already supposed to know my place.
“You're being dramatic,” Victoria told me when I asked her not to speak to me like the housekeeper.
Claire laughed.
Malcolm lowered his newspaper.
And Julian said, “Just apologize and move on.”
That was when I looked at him.
“Apologize for what?”
His jaw tightened.
“For embarrassing my mother.”
“No,” I said. “Your mother embarrassed herself.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Julian stood up.
“You don't come into this family and disrespect people.”
I set the coffee pot down.
“Funny,” I said. “Because I've been wondering what kind of family thinks humiliation is a wedding gift.”
And then he hit me.
Hard enough that my head turned.
Hard enough that the coffee in my hand splashed across the white tablecloth.
Victoria gasped.
Claire covered her mouth.
Malcolm said absolutely nothing.
Julian whispered, “Elena—”
I held up one hand.
“No.”
I walked to the hallway mirror and looked at my face.
A red mark was already forming.
Then I looked back at the dining room.
“You know what's interesting?” I asked.
Nobody answered.
“Last night, before I went upstairs, someone put something in my wedding bag.”
Julian went still.
Not nervous.
Terrified.
I reached into my purse and pulled out a small blue folder.
Victoria's expression changed first.
Then Malcolm's.
Claire actually stood up.
Julian took one step toward me.
“Don't open that.”
There it was.
The first honest thing he'd said all morning.
I looked down at the folder.
I had found it at 2:43 a.m., after Julian fell asleep.
Inside were copies of bank transfers, forged signatures, and a list of three companies I had never heard of.
But my name was on every page.
My signature.
My Social Security number.
My address.
I hadn't slept after that.
And I hadn't called the police yet because there was one detail I couldn't explain.
The final transfer was scheduled for noon.
Today.
For $2.8 million.
And according to the documents, I was the person authorizing it.
Julian's face had gone completely white.
“Give me the folder,” he said.
I stepped back.
Then his phone started ringing.
He looked at the screen.
So did I.
The caller ID said:
FEDERAL BANK FRAUD UNIT.
And suddenly, everyone in that room started talking at once.
