40 years ago today, about 1:30 AM, Bob Ballard and his team aboard the Knorr, finally found the wreck of the Titanic. Mass Productions may have digitized all the video footage of the 1985 discovery of the Titanic, and the first dive to it in 1986. Being top secret, we can neither confirm or deny that we did it ;)

A historical archive in Boston hired Mass Productions to digitize films and audio reels from the Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. collection. The audio reels were not labeled, so nobody knew what was on them. One of the audio reels turned out to contain a recording of the 1959 meeting of the "Alfalfa Club" in Washington DC. Mr. Lodge was elected President of the club that year. He gave a brief speech, and then Vice president Richard Nixon gave a surprise speech! During the informal speech, Nixon talked about his love for Hi-Fi audio, and that he was really enjoying his new Hi-Fi system with the new stereo sound technology. It's really cool when famous historic people from the past show up unexpectedly on an unmarked tape!

The first shipment of very rare 1" EV videotapes are here from our client in Canada. We will be recovering these videotapes for a Public Access Television Channel. They contain programs from the early days of the station. The could be in color, but more likely black and white because color Television cameras were very expensive at the time. First the tapes will require cleaning, then several days of baking in a lab over to stabilize them, as they will be sticky. The station is very excited about recovering the videos to digital files, as they want to re-broadcast the programs.

Mass Productions recently completed a multi year project to digitize over 700 VHS videotapes of performances for the Boston Ballet. A number of videotapes were sticky AMPEX brand. They required baking in a lab oven for two weeks before the tapes could be played one more time for digitization. The past performances are now easily accessible from anywhere by instructors and dancers.

These Panasonic audio reels from the 1960's were leaving behind a white residue all over the tape transport on our decks. It turns out to be failing silicon lubricant and it's flaking off the tape. We gently cleaned the tapes with a special silicon impregnated cleaning cloth to wipe off the old loose silicon and apply a new coat. The tapes then played perfectly and did not leave behind any more residue.

Our master electronics technician is busy getting a 1" EV format videotape deck up and running. We have 4 of them, so we have plenty of parts to work with. This format was used as a semi pro format in the late 1960's and into the 1970s. It was replaced with 1" Type C in the mid 70's. We have 40 of these rare tapes to transfer for a cable access channel in Vancouver. Their 1" EV deck stopped working decades ago, so nobody has seen the programs on the tapes in a very long time!

Mass Productions will be recovering 40 of these rare 1" EV format videotapes for the VIVO arts Centre in Vancouver BC this summer. The tapes will be baked, cleaned and digitized to files on a hard drive. VIVO will then archive the files and broadcast them on their Public Access TV station.
