Young Alec would often press his lips to his mother's forehead so she could feel the vibrations of his voice when he spoke to her. That simple act planted the seed for his lifelong obsession with helping people communicate.

Tragedy hit the family hard. Both of his brothers died from tuberculosis. To escape the damp climate that threatened Alec's own health, the family moved to Canada in 1870 and settled in Ontario. Alec soon moved to Boston, where he began teaching deaf students. He loved teaching and opened his own school for vocal physiology. He became a professor at Boston University even though he never earned a formal university degree.

One of his students was a bright young deaf woman named Mabel Hubbard. Despite their 10-year age difference, they fell deeply in love and married in 1877. While working on ways to send multiple telegraph messages at once, Alec and his assistant Thomas Watson accidentally created something far greater. On March 10, 1876, in a small attic workshop in Boston, Alec spoke the first words ever heard over a telephone: "Mr. Watson come here I want to see you." He had just turned 29.

While others accepted the world as it was, Leonardo wanted to understand how it worked.

And he didn’t just think about it. He studied it.

He would sit for hours observing nature. He studied the movement of water, the structure of plants, the anatomy of animals. He even secretly dissected human bodies, something that was considered controversial at that time, just to understand muscles, bones, and organs.

And the crazy part?

His drawings of the human body were so accurate that even today, scientists admire them.

But Leonardo’s mind didn’t stop there.

He imagined things that didn’t exist yet.

Flying machines.
Parachutes.
War machines.
Advanced mechanical systems.

He sketched ideas that looked like they came from the future, not the 1400s.

It’s like his mind was living hundreds of years ahead of his time.

Now here’s something most people don’t talk about.

Leonardo didn’t complete everything.

In fact, he left many works unfinished. He would start something with full passion, then suddenly get pulled into a new idea. A new question. A new curiosity.

To some people, this looked like failure.

But maybe it wasn’t failure.

Maybe his curiosity was just too powerful to stay focused on one thing.

Even with that, he still created some of the most iconic works in human history.

The Mona Lisa, with her mysterious expression that people still debate today.

The Last Supper, a painting filled with emotion, storytelling, and detail that feels alive even now.

And yet, those paintings were only a fraction of what he explored.

In his later years, Leonardo moved to France under the protection of King Francis I. There, he was finally given the freedom and respect he deserved. Even as his body grew weaker, his mind never slowed down.

He kept thinking.
Kept sketching.
Kept imagining.

Until his final days.

He died in 1519.

But his ideas didn’t die with him.

They lived on.

They inspired scientists, engineers, artists, and thinkers for centuries.

And maybe the most powerful thing about Leonardo da Vinci is this:

He didn’t try to be one thing.

He didn’t limit himself to one title.

He followed his curiosity wherever it led him.

Art. Science. Engineering. Anatomy. Nature.

Everything was connected in his mind.

And that’s the lesson he leaves behind.

You don’t have to choose just one path.

You don’t have to fit into one identity.

You can explore. You can learn. You can grow in different directions.
