The 1960 Edsel Ranger was part of the final model year for the short-lived Edsel brand, produced by Ford Motor Company. Positioned as the entry-level offering in the Edsel lineup, the Ranger was built on Ford’s full-size platform and shared many components with contemporary Ford models. The 1960 version featured a more restrained and cleaner design compared to the heavily styled 1958–59 models, dropping the signature “horse-collar” grille in favor of a horizontal oval grille that blended with quad headlights and a sleeker front fascia. It was available in several body styles, including two-door and four-door sedans, hardtops, and station wagons. Power came from Ford’s inline-six or optional V8 engines, with transmissions including manual and automatic options. Despite its improved styling and more conventional looks, Edsel’s reputation had already suffered, and sales were very low. With only about 2,571 Rangers built for 1960, they are now among the rarest American cars of the era. Collectors today value the 1960 Edsel Ranger for its uniqueness, historical significance, and status as one of the last models of Ford’s ambitious but ill-fated Edsel division.

1988 Zimmer Quicksilver 😬 😧

Only about 170 examples left Zimmer’s Pompano Beach, Florida, factory during this ultra-exclusive coupe’s brief 1986–1988 production run. Priced at $48,000 when new (nearly four times more than the roughly $13,000 Pontiac Fiero on which it was based), it was positioned to compete with Cadillac’s luxury offerings.

Former General Motors designer Don “D.A.” Johnson created the dramatic fiberglass bodywork by adding approximately 16 inches of length ahead of the cabin and 13 inches behind the rear wheels. Large chrome bumpers (manufactured in Taiwan), pop-up headlights, and a long, formal rear deck gave it a distinctive appearance unlike anything else on American roads.

The mid-mounted 2.8-liter V6 engine produced 140 horsepower, paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Performance was modest, with 0-60 mph taking about 10 seconds and fuel economy averaging around 20 mpg.

Zimmer Motor Cars Corporation declared bankruptcy in 1988, bringing an end to this unusual American luxury experiment.
