The cry of “Porgy up!” echoed across the deck of a 100-foot charter boat as anglers from Riverdale, Westchester and beyond reeled in silver fish from the Long Island Sound.

Among those participating in the fifth annual Jewish Community Fishing Trip June 7 were Riverdale residents Stephen Berkowitz and his 15-year-old son, Harrison, who joined dozens of passengers aboard one of Sound Bound Fishing Fleet’s vessels for a day on the water.

Organized by White Plains resident Robert Remlin, the outing was promoted through social media groups, including the Jewish Riverdale page, and has become a gathering point for Jewish fishers — hobbyists, amateurs, first-timers and experts alike — from across the region.

The Riverdale Art Association joined the Riverdale Temple and the Women of Reform Judaism in putting together “Inspired by the Arts,” an exhibition featuring 33 works from 20 artists.

At the helm of the show’s curation was Judy Zucker, the association’s exhibit chair. She noted the exhibit’s diverse range of mediums — photography, oil painting, pastels, water color, collaging — each with a common thread of being influenced by another visual or musical artist. Zucker also featured her own on-theme works at the exhibit, called “Still Life Inspired by Matisse” and “Irises Inspired by Van Gogh,” both made with oil paints.

Susan Chavez, president of the association and a multimedia artist, also had two pieces showing. “Blaze of Color,” is a mixed media piece, and “Falkirk Estate” was made with acrylic paints. Chavez said the exhibit was made to show the diversity of interpretation.

Editor's note 6/23/26: A previous version of this story stated Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park was reopened to the public. A portion of the park was open prior to the reopening of the trails.

The majority of Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park's trails are finally open to the public after five years of grueling volunteer work to restore trails eroded by rainfall and overgrown with invasive species.

Jodie Colón, founder of the Friends of Spuyten Duyvil — a group of volunteers, called stewards, trained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to maintain green spaces — said hundreds of people poured their time and energy into the park. Not only stewards, but local high school students and involved residents too, she said.

“I’m so excited,” Colón said, noting in past years, volunteers have put in 500 hours annually. “It’s so much work that it’s hard to grasp the magnitude of what we’ve done.”

Hayden on the Hudson resident Carla Olinger was reading the newspaper May 23 when a neighbor came to her for help with an unexpected problem: a green parakeet had flown in through her balcony door.

In recent months, Riverdale residents have reported at least five different missing birds on social media, but none gained as much attention as the monk parakeet that flew into Olinger’s life. An avid bird lover and owner, she fondly named the bird Houdini, for its ability to skillfully escape from a cage.

A bird suspected to be Houdini was first spotted May 18, perched on the balcony of an apartment near Independence Avenue and West 237th Street. Two days later, another sighting was reported at Hudson Manor Terrace. Three days after that, Houdini made his grand entrance at Hayden on the Hudson.

For nearly two decades, a small Riverdale deli by West 260th Street has been more than a place to grab breakfast or lunch. When Yohan’s Deli closes June 21 after 18 years, it will mark the end of a journey that began thousands of miles away in Mexico.

Josue Guerrero Arena and Reyna Silva Ruize arrived in the United States seeking opportunities they could not find at home. Guerrero Arena came in 1997 from Tehuitzingo, a small village in the Mexican state of Puebla, while Silva Ruize arrived from Izúcar de Matamoros in 2000. Both came without legal status and, like many newly arrived immigrants, started with little.

In New York, the couple met while renting rooms in the same crowded house, where as many as 15 people shared the space. They began dating within a month of meeting and spent their early years working long hours and saving whatever they could.

Walking through the halls of RiverSpring Living, residents don’t simply pass by the generic prints often associated with nursing homes. Instead, they are greeted with vivid Armenian landscapes, Soviet-era still-life lithographs, delicate Jewish etchings and original works by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

Spread throughout the Riverdale campus is a collection of more than 4,500 works of art, many tied to Russian, Jewish and Eastern European history, among other styles and cultures. The collection, partially housed in the on-site Derfner Judaica Museum, stretches across hallways, residential floors and public gathering spaces, transforming the senior living facility into something closer to a museum.

Seventeen high school seniors from the John F. Kennedy Campus earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy June 2, a distinction awarded to graduates who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional language.

The recipients, representing Marble Hill High School for International Studies, Bronx Theatre High School and Bronx School of Law and Finance, were recognized during a ceremony celebrating not only academic achievement, but also the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds that shaped their journeys.

The students are part of a growing number of multilingual learners being recognized across the city. Last school year, more than 2,500 students from 133 schools earned the seal of biliteracy, according to a New York City Public Schools spokesperson — a 29 percent increase in recipients and a 24 percent increase in participating schools compared with the prior school year.

Friends and family gathered at Stuart Chen-Hayes and Sosimo Aparis’ eclectic Riverdale apartment May 31 expecting to celebrate a housewarming party. Instead, they found themselves attending a wedding.

Guests spent the afternoon admiring the couple’s newly renovated one-bedroom dwelling, touring vibrant artwork displayed throughout the home and listening to heartfelt speeches celebrating Aparis’ recent academic achievements: an associates degree in early childhood education from Bronx Community College and a 3.92 GPA. The first in his family to hold a college degree, Aparis will start his first year at City College this fall with his sights set on a bachelor’s in early childhood education.
