The city’s department of small business services teamed up with Council member Pierina Sanchez and Our Bronx, formerly the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, on Sept 1. for a door-to-door business outreach effort near the Kingsbridge Armory.

Seven teams fanned out along the commercial corridor carrying information about city programs and the Business Owner Bill of Rights, a formal city document that establishes protections for small business owners — ensuring the right to transparent communication with the city and assistance from municipal agencies.

The effort was aimed at closing a gap city officials and organizers say persists even with myriad existing resources, as many merchants do not know where to find them, how to use them or what protections they have when dealing with city agencies.

A U.S. judge ruled Aug. 31 Assembly member Jeffrey Dinowitz’s “Climate Change Superfund Act” — which would require fossil fuel companies fund projects addressing the effects of climate change — was unconstitutional, as well as invalid since there is already a federal law that regulates the emission of hazardous air pollutants.

The law would identify major companies responsible for more than 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions globally between 2000 and 2018 that have sufficient ties to New York, and require them to contribute based on their share of those emissions. The state would collect $75 billion over 25 years, or $3 billion annually, according to the law.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the act in December 2024, and said at the time — amid record rainfalls, heat waves and storms, similar to what the city has endured this year — it would make sure companies helped fund infrastructure investments like coastal protection and flood mitigation systems. It also aims to charge the companies viewed as responsible, instead of using New Yorkers’ tax dollars to remediate the damage, Dinowitz told The Press.

Two years after Manhattan College was renamed Manhattan University, its street followed suit at a co-naming ceremony Sept. 3 — with one sign that reads “Manhattan College Pkwy,” and another underneath that says “Manhattan University Way.”

Manhattan University first announced the name change in August 2024, saying at the time that it better reflected the school’s more than 100 majors, minors, graduate programs and advanced certificates and degrees. The shift also aimed to attract more students from around the world to “this premiere higher educational institution,” the school said.

A new housing plan aims to bring 4,075 housing units to greater Riverdale in the next five years — a jump for a neighborhood that produced less than 60 percent of that amount in the last 15 years, according to data from the New York City Department of City Planning.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the department of city planning released a draft report Aug. 19 called the “Fair Housing Growth Strategy.” It detailed the city’s need for housing and provided a framework for how each neighborhood can do its part to provide. This included a five-year unit production target for every community district, identifying what the city needs long-term and what obstacles are hindering progress toward fair housing.

In the summer of 2009, a resident of the New York City Housing Authority’s Marble Hill Houses, Cedric Gadsen, fatally crashed his motorcycle near West 225th Street. That August, thousands turned out to Marble Hill Day, an annual neighborhood festival, soon donning shirts that friend and fellow resident Corey Fields designed in Gadsen’s honor.

It was the first instance of a community tradition that has prevailed for 17 years. Each batch of shirts features a new, hyperlocal design that Fields sketches and then replicates digitally for printing. On the front, an homage to Marble Hill Houses, and on the back, a growing list of deceased neighbors who were known and loved by many.

The New York City Housing Authority’s Marble Hill Houses covers about 0.3 square miles, and most of its exterior and inner walkways are covered in scaffolding, some of which has been up since 2018, according to the housing authority.

The complex is currently undergoing major facade and brickwork repairs that should be complete by June 2028, according to the NYCHA Capital Needs and Projects Tracker. Construction started in December 2025 — made possible by state funding NYCHA received that summer — leaving residents frustrated some of the scaffolding, also known as sidewalk shedding, has remained for the past eight years without any visible improvements to their buildings.

Marble Hill Houses isn’t alone, as hundreds of miles of scaffolding adorn structures citywide. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city’s department of buildings finalized new rules Aug. 20 that the mayor’s office said will implement less intrusive designs and speed up the timeline of shed removal by requiring building owners to start repairs sooner. The change is an effort to put pressure on owners who keep scaffolding up for extended periods because the city’s fines are cheaper than the cost of repairs.
