X-15 – The Final Flight That Never Happened

On what was supposed to be the 200th flight of the legendary X-15, Major William J. “Pete” Knight prepared for takeoff. But a sudden snowstorm swept across Edwards Air Force Base, forcing the mission to be cancelled. The rocket plane never flew again.

When the program began in 1954, experts weren’t even sure a pilot could survive the two full minutes of weightlessness the X-15 would bring—four times longer than any jet pilot had ever experienced. Yet the X-15 broke barriers, reaching the edge of space and leaving behind a legacy that inspired the future of space exploration.
