As we celebrate Mothers Day I want to also celebrate ONLY SOME OF GOD’S CHILDREN OR MISSISSIPPI MAGNOLIAS by Paris Crayton III. This past Thursday I had the opportunity to experience this masterpiece. I watch and study a lot of theatre, some are good enough to be entertaining but there are less that make you want to shout about them from the rooftops. Honey I’m gone shout about this play, this cast, this playwright to anyone who will hear me.
I’ll try to honor this play without giving away too much but still giving it its flowers 🤭. Good theatre, to me, makes me feel seen in more ways than one. This play spoke about the continuous struggle between generations “what’s the best way for liberation?”, while honoring our struggles, our rage, our love, and our God. I sobbed watching this play because the actors transformed on that stage and those moments of intimacy or devastation made me want to lean in more each scene (who said Black people don’t do magical realism??!).
This is the type of art that is important to me. These are the stories I think are worth telling. You showed me that this soil is fresh, it sustains, it holds, and it is legacy. Thank each of you for creating and collaborating so we all could feel with you. I’m sad I didn’t get a picture with all of yall — too busy running my mouth lol. Parissssss I need that script! Lol
Congratulations to you all on the closing of the world premiere 🥹. I hope you felt all of the love, the ovations and I cannot wait to see where it goes and work with yall ❤️. Daniiiiii I’m so grateful you brought us. I need this!!
