When we pulled up the existing turf for this new pool deck, we discovered that the previous installer had sloped the granite toward the drain—but then covered the drain with turf and simply cut a few slits in the backing.

That’s the easy way, not the right way. The drain should remain accessible using a proper drain grate, catch basin, channel drain, or an appropriately engineered drainage system.

There’s always an easy way and a right way. So ask yourself: which kind of turf company do you want working in your yard?

Public money deserves transparency—and qualified contractors deserve a fair opportunity to compete.

When we say nutsedge is invasive—we mean INVASIVE. 🌱

We apply pre-emergent during site preparation before installing artificial turf, but pre-emergent primarily targets germinating seeds. Nutsedge spreads most aggressively underground through rhizomes and tubers, or “nutlets,” which can survive beneath the surface and send up new shoots through seams, edges and drainage holes.

So, seeing nutsedge does not automatically mean your installer or landscaper did something wrong. Even with proper preparation and a w**d barrier, sometimes nature wins another round!

Quick correction from the video: nutsedge can spread by seed, but its underground network is the bigger problem. Pulling the visible top often leaves that network behind, allowing it to return.

I personally used Ortho Nutsedge Killer. Its active ingredient, sulfentrazone, is designed to target plant tissue. The product is not specifically labeled for artificial turf, so I spot-tested it first. After one application and seven days, the nutsedge was crispy, with no visible discoloration or damage to this turf. That was my experience with this installation—not a guarantee for every turf product.

When you work in artificial turf, but your phone doesn’t speak installer! How many times has this happened to you and what funny things did your phone auto-correct to?

Castle seams, S-seams, serpent seam tools…there are plenty of “new” ways to seam artificial turf.

I don’t recommend the castle seam because it creates butt joints all along the seam. Then there’s the S-seam—but today, we’re talking about the OG: the clean, properly installed straight seam. Simple, proven, and still my go-to.

Well, I didn’t know I’d have to remind an architect to include the words “approved equal” or “equivalent” in a public bid—but here we are.

Want to know what gatekeeping looks like? It’s when a specific product is required, but the manufacturer refuses to sell that product to qualified contractors trying to bid the job.

So I have to ask: Is that really a fair and competitive bid when public money is paying for it?

Buy turf from people who actually want your business. 😂

Good products matter—but so do good partners. Answer the phone. Return the email. Give contractors a fair shot to compete.

Competition is good for our industry. Gatekeeping isn’t. Buy turf from companies that earn your business—not ones that decide who’s allowed to compete.

The turf industry is big enough for all of us. 🌱
