From something I am working on:
Kathontho crept slowly through Maintenance Hall 12. As the lowest-ranking electrical technician, he’d been sent down to investigate a report of power fluctuations. And it seemed he’d found them. The emergency lights were flickering on and off, resulting in a pale blue strobe effect. Elsewhere in the hall, it was shadowed darkness.
Pulling the flashlight off his belt and turning it on, Kathontho panned a circle of white light across the hallway. It was empty. He moved forward, looking for the service station. Hopefully he could reset systems and get back to the upper decks, where there were working lights and people.
A sudden movement caught his eye, causing his ears to fold back even tighter against his skull. A black shape, formless and even darker than the shadows, moved along the floor. It paused at a cluster of power conduits, audibly snuffling. As Kathontho’s flashlight beam passed over it, the shape seemed to recoil, then stood. It was toweringly tall, filling the hallway, and seemed almost a void in which light vanished. The head was skeletal, the eyes burning dots, with branching horns projecting from the mane.
Kathontho’s blood went cold as the shape looked at him.
“GET OUT.”
Kathontho got.
