Did you know the Baja 1000 wasn’t originally planned as a race?
It started in 1962 with a simple idea — Honda wanted to prove the reliability of their new CL72 Scrambler motorcycle. So they sent a couple of riders down 950 miles of raw Baja California terrain. Rocks, sand washes, dry lake beds, cattle crossings, mountain passes. Barely a paved road in sight.
Word spread. Other riders started making the run just to beat the record. The buzz grew louder every year.
By 1967, an off-road enthusiast named Ed Pearlman had seen enough. He gathered a small group, drove the peninsula himself, and used that trip as the spark to officially organize the event — founding NORRA (the National Off-Road Racing Association) in the process.
That first race was called the Mexican 1000. It later became known as the Baja 1000. One of the most brutal, iconic off-road races on the planet — born not from a boardroom, but from a group of guys who just wanted to see if they could make it to La Paz.
Over 50 years later, the race still runs. And it’s still the ultimate test of machine, crew, and pure will.
That’s the offroad world for you. It was never corporate. It was always grassroots.
