Sheriff’s Deputies Help Contain 26-Acre Kanan Fire
[8/2/26 - Thousand Oaks, CA]
Ventura County Sheriff Thousand Oaks Police Department deputies jumped into action Tuesday afternoon as the rapidly spreading Kanan Fire threatened homes in the North Ranch neighborhood, joining residents in an effort to keep flames away from structures.

As the fire crept closer to homes, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies and neighbors connected garden hoses from multiple properties, creating a makeshift hose line to knock down flames until firefighters could move in. Their quick actions helped protect homes during the critical early moments of the fire.

At approximately 2:09 p.m., Ventura County Fire Department crews were dispatched to a reported brush fire near Westlake Boulevard and Kanan Road. While firefighters were responding, a large smoke column was visible as the fire, initially reported at about a half-acre, spread and began spotting ahead of itself.

Evacuation orders were issued for nearby homes as firefighters launched an aggressive structure defense and vegetation fire attack.

More than 130 firefighters, aided by 55+ fire apparatus and multiple helicopters, battled the blaze from the ground and air. Helicopters repeatedly refilled from nearby Bard Reservoir while making water drops on the advancing fire.

Firefighters stopped the forward progress of the blaze by approximately 3:00 p.m. The fire ultimately burned 26 acres.

Crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and improving containment while road closures stayed in place along Westlake Boulevard. No injuries or structure losses were immediately reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
