This is the question behind our magazine pillar, "Intellectual Formation."

When our actions align with our faith, we become integrated persons. Ideally, our minds, bodies, and spirits are aligned with God's will. The more we are aligned, the greater peace and healing we'll find.

There's a lot out there for holistic living and spiritual formation (including in our magazine!), but without intentional cultivation, it is easy to ignore the intellectual life.

Continued education as an adult requires schedules and habits that are hard to hold on to once we are removed from a physical school building.

Education doesn't have to be some lofty thing, though. It's as simple as learning about something you love, or gathering a new hobby.

New skills require habits, so habit formation is where we come in!

In each issue, you'll find something to stimulate your intellect, and something to spur you on your journey.

Join us in learning!

"When we look at creation, we form in our mind an image, not of the essence, but of the wisdom of Him who made all things wisely."
-St. Gregory of Nyssa

Maria von Trapp (yes, that Maria von Trapp!) calls the summer season "the Green Meadow" in her wonderful book, "Around the Year." After liturgical colors of violet, rose, white, and red, suddenly we're met with a sea of green.

"If the festive character of the first part of the year is comparable to the mountain chains of the Alps or the Andes, the single feasts in the months after Pentecost are like isolated peaks towering above the green meadow." --Around the Year

So make the most of each isolated peak! Have a steak on the feast of the Sacred Heart, a bonfire on the eve of the nativity of St. John the Baptist, write a letter for the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, enjoy caramels for Our Lady of Carmel, meringues for the Assumption... Throw in a few special saints' feasts and the summer can be full of occasions to celebrate!

Maria says later on:

"With every passing year, I realize more deeply how joyful our religion is... There is one great art we are taught in childhood and for which we cannot be grateful enough, and that is how to celebrate feasts."

Liturgical living is one of our pillars at The Mustard Seed Press. It's such a wonderful way to bring the faith outside the walls of church, and widely appealing. If you're new to liturgical living, start small! Sometimes those small practices become the best memories.

Work, kids, chores... It is too easy to get lost in routine and remember God only in the context of an apology.

"I'm so sorry, Lord! I'll try to pray better tomorrow."

It is good to want to give God our best, to want to present Him with a perfect love, but often on waiting for perfection in prayer, we neglect to pray at all.

Do you believe that God created you because He loves you? He asks for your love in return.

It's not so difficult to grow in love for God. Try talking with Him throughout your day.

That first sip of coffee in the morning? Offer it to God with a thank you! That sweet baby kiss? Use it to uplift your heart. Traffic frustrations? Ask to grow in patience, or complain in frustration! Talk with Him! He's listening.

Check in with God throughout your day. This was the secret of St. Therese of Lisieux. All the little sacrifices and annoyances were offered with great love -- and all of the joys, too.

One of our pillars at The Mustard Seed Press is the spiritual life. We want to help you grow in holiness because we know that sainthood isn't normally made through one heroic act-- it's made through a relationship and all of the tiny heroic acts living out duty with great love results in.

Want to learn more? Our summer issue includes topics for meditation and simple instruction on how to complete your own!

If you do one thing today, let it be offering something to God with love. Starting is easy and He wants to help you! Why not let Him?

When we first envisioned The Mustard Seed Press, it wasn't just a magazine we pictured.

We wanted to create and encourage community, too.

What has this looked like?

First, we made one of our four pillars "community," with the hope that by discussing an area of genuine hardship for many people, we could both walk with those longing for fellowship and support, and embolden our readers to cultivate lasting community ties.

Second, we as a team have designed and participated in events meant to "fill one's cup." Last summer, this looked like charcuterie nights in the park. Last fall, this looked like a women's tea and temperament study. Most recently, and traveled to a ladies' tea hosted by Holy Family Parish in Three Forks, where gave an amazing talk on charity and the feminine genius. Soon, we'll host a ladies' night in the park.

Third, we've included community building ideas in each of our issues. Everything from recipes to easy-to-execute ways to invite more people into one's life.

As the school year is winding down and the daylight lasts longer, why not try to grow community this summer, along with your zucchini and roses?

The ingredients for a fun event tend to be simple: good food, plentiful beverages, and a fun purpose.

In our summer issue, we created a summer tea recipe spread to take care of the "good food and plentiful beverage" aspect. All you need is to think of is a fun reason to get together!

"Pentecost, 1782"
Istvan Dorffmaister

"Today we have arrived at the peak of all blessings, we have reached the capital of feasts, we have obtained the very fruit of our Lord's promise." -St. John Chrysostom

It is fitting that on this day, fifty days from the Pasch, was celebrated the Jewish Feast of Firstfruits (Exodus 23:16).

The Feast of Pentecost, "commemorates not only the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Disciples, but also the fruits and effects of that event: the completion of the work of redemption, the fullness of grace for the Church and its children, and the gift of faith for all nations." -Father Francis Weiser, SJ

Today in the Latin Church, the liturgical color is red, symbolizing the love of the Holy Spirit who descended upon the Apostles in tongues of fire.

You'll hear the sequence, "Veni Sancte Spiritus," a hymn that first appeared in liturgical books around 1200 AD. The poem has since been known as the "Golden Sequence" because of its richness in thought and expression.

In the poem, we find this stanza:

"Grant to Thy faithful, dearest Lord,
whose only hope is Thy sure word,
the sevenfold gifts of grace."

This, of course, refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, first given at Pentecost, and now given to all the faithful at Confirmation.

"O blessed Light of life Thou art;
fill with Thy light the inmost heart
of those who hope in Thee."

Come, Holy Spirit, come!

(Interested in learning about the charisms, individual graces given by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of the Church? .integrated.life wrote about them in our summer issue! Here's a sneak peak: "A charism is not simply something you are good at, nor is it merely a role you hold in life... charisms are different: they carry a spiritual fruitfulness that points directly to God's action. They are graces that energize and strengthen you to serve.")

Recently, we asked a Catholic Businesswomen's group for feedback on our website. We were blown away by their responses.

Here was the feminine genius on display.

These women generously gave of their time to give us helpful, thoughtful feedback. Because of them, we have been able to make our website more user friendly and have added additional features.

The Feminine Genius is widely thought to comprise four features: Receptivity, Generosity, Sensitivity, and a Maternal Heart. While the women who provided us with feedback displayed all of these qualities, we especially want to thank them for their generosity.

Interested in learning more about the feminine genius and how to cultivate virtue and prune vice as a woman? Check out our updated website: themustardseedpress.com, and our new site tab, "Preview Articles" to preview Caitlyn Van Horssen's Letter to Young Women.

Here's a taste of what you'll find:
"This pattern and openness to ongoing conversion allows each woman to grow in knowledge of self and gradually integrate the feminine gifts in every facet of life. We can’t do this without the habit of recollection in which we meet God in silence and with humility."
