This generation is coming around to the concept of an album versus a downloadable song. Owning and collecting. There is magic and experience along with craft and creation while creator connects with consumer. This largely does not occur in a digital playlist. The primary loss to the devotee is the experience itself which requires patience and space while the art reveals itself in subjective ways - often building significant moods which as a body of work resembles that of an epic opus compared to a singular scene. Song order matters. Songs play off each other. Album art now lost as concepts are now hidden. Imagine watching a 15 second edit of The Fellowship of the Ring without the context of the entire film or book. In the downloadable world the consumer does not own nor partake in the creator's original inspiration but rather samples its taste. It leaves the listener wanting more but forgos the path to take them there. The artist remains elusive and vague like a poster on the wall without the ability to communicate. Fans wear the t shirt without knowing the story.

NEW FEATURE: 3 SONGS IN OUR HEAD. There usually isn't much explanation. Sometimes you are just in the shower and a song pops in. Perhaps it sneaks in on a Netflix series or a commercial. But here are the three songs in our head for this week:

https://youtu.be/yLvpZwN9Oko

An overlooked gem from The Joshua Tree. The new version on Songs of Surrender is gawd awful, adding chintzy horns. Can't shake the ghost of this version.

My head won't sit still whenever I hear this song. The air drumming on my car dashboard is cat-like. The guitar breaks sound like na-na-na-na-na-na-na in my head long after the song is over.

This one came out of nowhere. I can't remember the last time I actually listened to it. One day I just sat and wondered, "Who are the dead next door?" Was this some kind of 80's nuclear bad dream in the era of Reagan? One error, silent terror - the dead next door. It could happen anywhere. Sunday was hot, Monday was not?

What songs popped into your head recently?
