Our first Catoctin Cougars boys basketball game on the radio this season. Tues. Jan 31 tipoff @ 7pm

47 years ago today, Laverne & Shirley premiered. It ran on ABC from January 27, 1976, to May 10, 1983. It starred Penny Marshall as Laverne De Fazio and Cindy Williams as Shirley Feeney, single roommates who worked as bottle cappers in a fictitious Milwaukee brewery called Shotz Brewery.
The show was a spin-off from Happy Days, as the two lead characters were originally introduced on that series as acquaintances of Fonzie (Henry Winkler). Set in roughly the same time period, the timeline started in approximately 1958, when the series began, through 1967, when the series ended. As with Happy Days, it was made by Paramount Television, created by Garry Marshall, and executive produced by Garry Marshall, Edward K. Milkis, and Thomas L. Miller.
Great song from the legendary Everly Brothers Don and Phil. Webb Pierce, who was a hugely popular country star of the '50s, recorded this six weeks after the Everly Brothers did. When the duo got wind of Pierce's recording, they were worried his rendition would overshadow theirs. Don Everly put in a frantic call to producer Archie Bleyer. He recalled: "I said, 'Archie, we're really in trouble - Webb Pierce has covered 'Bye Bye Love.' He said, 'Who's Webb Pierce?' Then he said, 'Don't worry about it, we're hitting the pop charts.'" Well, Bleyer was right. While Pierce's version took the #7 spot on the Country chart, it barely made a showing on the Hot 100, peaking at #73. The Everly Brothers well, their version peaked at number two on the Hot 100.

Today in 1970, John Lennon wrote, recorded and mixed his new single 'Instant Karma!' all in one day. It ranks as one of the fastest-released songs in pop music history, recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios and arriving in stores only ten days later.

Kemosabi Joe just played this great and funny song by the legendary Stax artist Otis Redding
along with Carla Thomas called Tramp. This is a song you won't hear anywhere else besides COOL Oldies 1450 WTHU. This song was released in 1967 and peaked at number 26 on 6/3/67. Five months later unfortunately Otis lost his life in a plane crash, that also killed Four members of the Bar-Kays.
Otis Ray Redding, Jr. (September 9, 1941 -- December 10, 1967) was an American soul singer. Often called the "King of Soul", he is renowned for an ability to...
It's gameday y'all! This should be a great game.....
Bigg Mike is on the air, with some great music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Right here on Cool Oldies 1450 and wthuradio.com.
This was surprising that this song only peaked at number 17. The Beatles weren't the only popular band from Liverpool, Gerry & The Pacemakers were also formed in Liverpool. Most say they were in the shadow of the Beatles. I think they're extremely underrated as a band. Gerry Marsden was a tremendous singer. Unfortunately, we lost him back in 2021. Gerry's brother Fred Marsden was also in the group, along with Les Maguire, and Les Chadwick.
The country roads in this song are in one of our Four-State area States West Virginia, but Denver had never even been to West Virginia. Bill and Taffy Danoff started writing the song while driving to Maryland - they'd never been to West Virginia either! Danoff got his inspiration from postcards sent to him by a friend who DID live there, and from listening to the powerful AM station WWVA out of Wheeling, West Virginia, which he picked up in Massachusetts when he was growing up. The Shenandoah River is in West Virginia, running right through Harper's Ferry into the Potomac. The Blue Ridge Mountain Ranges run in a strip from northeast West Virginia to its southwest across the eastern part of the state. Clopper Road originates in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It was a single lane road, but is now a busy four-lane road that heads to Germantown, Maryland. No country road anymore... not even close! It is attainable by exiting off of I-270 at Exit 10.
Robert Weston Smith was born on this day, January 21, 1938, and died on July 1st, 1995. Best known as Wolfman Jack, he was an American disc jockey active from 1960 till his death in 1995.
Famous for his gravelly voice, he credited it for his success, saying, "It's kept meat and potatoes on the table for years for Wolfman and Wolfwoman. A couple of shots of whiskey helps it. I've got that nice raspy sound."
Cleveland’s Alan Freed had originally called himself the "Moon Dog" after New York City street musician Moondog. Freed both adopted this name and used a recorded howl to give his early broadcasts a unique character.
Smith's adaptation of the Moondog theme was to call himself Wolfman Jack and add his own sound effects. The character was based in part on the manner and style of bluesman Howlin' Wolf.
At KCIJ, he first began to develop his famous alter ego, Wolfman Jack. According to author Philip A. Lieberman, Smith's "Wolfman" persona "derived from Smith's love of horror films and his shenanigans as a 'wolfman' with his two young nephews. The 'Jack' nickname was taken from the 'hipster' lingo of the 1950s, as in 'Take a page from my book, Jack', or the more popular, 'Hit the road, Jack.'"
In 1963, Smith took his act to the border when he was on hired of XERF-AM at Ciudad Acuña in Mexico, a station across the U.S.-Mexico border from Del Rio, Texas, whose high-powered border blaster signal could be picked up across much of the United States.
The Wolfman described the reach of the XERF signal: "We had the most powerful signal in North America. Birds dropped dead when they flew too close to the tower. A car driving from New York to L.A. would never lose the station."
In 1965, Wolfman Jack moved to XERB (1090 AM), another power-pumping clear-channel radio station located across the border on Mexico's Baja peninsula, at Rosarito Beach, near Tijuana.
Beaming his now-trademark mix of rowdy rock, raw rhythm and blues, and verbal antics, the Wolfman quickly found a new legion of fans from Southern California, up through the Great Northwest, into the remote regions of Alaska and Canada.
At his peak, Wolfman Jack was heard on more than 2,000 radio stations in 53 countries.
In 1973, he appeared as himself in George Lucas's film American Graffiti. Lucas gave him a fraction of a "point", the division of the profits from a film, and the extreme financial success of American Graffiti provided him with a regular income for life.
Wolfman Jack also served as the announcer and frequent guest host on The Midnight Special, the original late night live Rock n' Roll variety show on NBC.
Jim Morrison's lyrics for "The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)" were influenced by Wolfman Jack's broadcasting. He is also mentioned in the Grateful Dead song "Ramble On Rose". He furnished his voice in The Guess Who's top-10 hit single "Clap for the Wolfman". Wolfman Jack was regularly parodied on The Hilarious House of Frightenstein as "The Wolfman," an actual werewolf disc jockey with a look inspired by the original The Wolf Man movies. A few years earlier, Todd Rundgren recorded the tribute "Wolfman Jack" on the album Something/Anything?; the single version of the track includes a shouted talk-over introduction by the Wolfman, but on the album version, Rundgren performs that part himself.
On July 1, 1995, Smith died from a heart attack at his house in Belvidere, North Carolina, shortly after finishing a weekly broadcast. He was 57 years old.
This is one of those 60's teenage tragedy songs. This one was about a boy who was supposed to meet his girlfriend next to the river, but finds out once he gets there she committed su***de. She left a note behind that she was cheating on him and could no longer live with the guilt. This was one of many hits that Pat Boone had, this song topped the charts in June of '61.

This one had to be done. This is the Alternate Ending, because I liked the Dance that he does at the end. I know it's a Comedian.

We lost Don Wilson, co-founder and rhythm guitarist of The Ventures, a year ago today. He was 88 years old.
With an estimated 100 million record sales, the Ventures set the standard for instrumental guitar rock in the 1960s and 1970s.
Their hits included the instantly recognizable escalating riff of “Walk, Don’t Run,” and the equally familiar theme song for “Hawaii Five-O.” Those and other songs propelled their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Some rock historians and critics felt the honor was long overdue.
RIP Don. Thank you for the music.
Great opportunity for those youngsters who love the great game.
It may be winter, but let's think about Spring. It's time for the 2023 Frederick American Little League(District II) 2023 Baseball Registration. Opening day is April 1st.

It was 53 years ago (tomorrow), that Diana Ross gave her final performance as a member of the Supremes. The show took place at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas, and it was released the following April as the double-live album called Farewell. The show itself was emotional for all the Supremes, which at that time included original member Mary Wilson as well as Cindy Birdsong, who had replaced Florence Ballard in 1967. For fans, the split first seemed inevitable after Ballard's departure, when the group's name changed from the Supremes to Diana Ross & The Supremes. The concert featured most of the group's hits, including "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone," "Love Child," and their recent Top Ten hit with the Temptations, "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." The show also included a medley of early hits featuring "Stop! In The Name Of Love," "Come See About Me," and "My World Is Empty Without You."

Seems like everyday almost, we're having to post sad news. Robbie Bachman, the drummer for Bachman–Turner Overdrive who powered the band's biggest hits, including "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and "Takin' Care of Business," has died at the age of 69. Maybe Jeff Beck needed another drummer in Rock and Roll Heaven.

A sad day, as Lisa Marie Presley passed away. May she rest in peace.
RIP Lisa Marie Presley.
The singer, daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, was rushed to the hospital on Jan. 12 for a possible cardiac arrest
This is such a great song. It makes me think of my grandparents. When this song came on, I remember my Grandmother and Grandfather telling me stories about them going on dates there in the 1940s and 50s. A theme park in the shadows of New York, located in Palisades, NJ that no longer exists, however, thanks to this song. The memories of this park will always remain.

TJ has beaten Urbana boys basketball 11 straight games in a row. The last time Urbana won a game against TJ was 7 years ago in Jan. 2016. Is 2023 the year the Hawks end that run? Find out this Friday!
Salute of the coffee mug, RIP, another star in Rock & Roll Heaven.
Jeff Beck, a guitar legend who first made a name for himself back in the '60s, has died.
Still Rocking
Another artist in Rock and Roll Heaven. Jeff Beck passed away. Beck was widely recognised as one of the single most important guitarists of his generation. He first became known as the lead guitar player for The Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton in the band in 1965.

The Top 5 at Five will be in an hour. We're counting down the top 5 songs from today in 1962. Today's number 1 song was a massive hit and started a dance craze in the Country. There's a cool story to it, but it was a cover it was originally done by another well-known group, that didn't come close to today's number-one artist but I'm going to play it back to back, with today's number 1 artist. Of course with 25 minutes of commercial-free music, on Cool Oldies 1450 and wthuradio.com
