From Small School to State Stage: Old Fort 4x400 Makes History
FOSTORIA — Old Fort’s boys 4x400-meter relay team delivered one of the biggest moments of the OHSAA Division V Regional Finals on Saturday, capturing a regional championship and punching its ticket to the state track and field championships June 4-5 in Columbus.
The Stockaders quartet of Isaac Gallagher, Brayden Davis, Aiden Dick and Aidan Chapman combined for a school-record performance in the finals, continuing a season-long rise that turned a small-school relay team into one of the area’s top contenders.
Gallagher opened the race before Davis powered through the second leg to help Old Fort seize control. Dick held the lead on the third leg, setting up Chapman for the anchor leg sprint to the finish line.
For Davis, the accomplishment reflected months of work behind the scenes.
“We worked our butts off this season,” Davis said. “I don’t think a single one of us here have missed a practice.”
The relay team improved dramatically throughout the spring after beginning the season running in the 3:37 range before dropping more than 13 seconds by regionals.
Despite coming from one of the smallest schools competing at regionals, the Stockaders embraced the challenge.
“It really shows that even though you may not have the class size, it’s about the amount of work that you really put in and the bond you have for your teammates,” Davis said. “Even though we’re a small school doesn’t mean we can’t compete.”
Gallagher, running in just his second year of track, said the relay’s chemistry has made the experience special.
“This is only my second year on track, so I never thought I’d be running 51s, making it to state in the 4x4,” Gallagher said. “I got really close to them two. It’s been fun.”
Dick admitted the pressure intensified once Old Fort grabbed the lead entering his leg of the race.
“I was running scared,” Dick said. “I was just trying to stay ahead the first two and just give it everything you got in the last and just try and hold off everyone.”
Chapman sealed the victory with a strong closing kick over the final stretch.
“The last 100 meters, I just kick it because that’s when I had the most energy to give it all I got,” Chapman said.
Chapman will also compete individually in the Division V state 400-meter race after earning a wildcard berth based on his regional time.
As the team celebrated its regional title moments after crossing the finish line, the reality of qualifying for state finally began to sink in for the Stockaders, who will now head to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium looking to continue their historic season.
