We were saddened to learn of the passing of David Pryce-Jones, whose novel "The Afternoon Sun" we were privileged to bring back into print this year. Here's Dan's tweet from X:

Very sad to learn of DPJ’s passing. Tivoli Books recently reissued his fine novel The Afternoon Sun, for which he wrote us a marvelous new intro despite his great age. Based on his mother’s family, it’s a fierce and moving account of four generations of Viennese Jews. David was a joy to work with on this revival, and my condolences go out to his widow and family. RIP David Pryce-Jones.

Available now from Tivoli Books: The Afternoon Sun by David Pryce-Jones

This fierce multigenerational novel brings to life one of the Habsburg Empire’s richest and most powerful Jewish families—the Ellingens, whose rise and fall coincides with the terrible graph of twentieth century European history. Gustav’s genius for business enables him to ascend from the poverty and obscurity of an orphanage to the pinnacle of Viennese society. But it will fall to Henriette, his only child, to navigate a world gone mad. As anti-Semitism erupts anew in Europe and beyond, this dazzling forgotten classic could not be more timely or important.

Available now from Tivoli Books: The Comfort Letter by Arthur R. G. Solmssen.

The Comfort Letter generates drama from the dilemma of a lawyer retained by a hyperkinetic takeover artist rolling up businesses so fast that neither his finances nor his financers can keep up. As is often the case in Solmssen’s novels, there is a lost love uneasily re-encountered, and a perceptive focus on the tensions between Philadelphia’s WASP elite and the talented Jews they embrace, fear and disdain.

Available now from Tivoli Books: Randall by Jonathan Gibbs.

Originally published in Britain, Jonathan Gibbs’ Randall is quite simply one of the shrewdest and most outrageous art-world novels in the English language. The eponymous artist at the book’s center is a provocateur, a manipulator and a vandal—but also quite possibly a genius. Seen through the eyes of Vincent, his finance bro friend, admirer and rival in love, Randall is an artist for whom art is less an aesthetic challenge than a marketing problem, an act of aggression and a spoof (if also a consuming passion). Readers will be fascinated and appalled, but also faced with profound questions about art, commerce, and our debts to one another. As Vincent eventually discovers after his friend’s death, there is a lot more to Randall than showmanship, and a lot more to his art than the funhouse mirror he holds up to the vanities around him. British reviewers raved. Now Americans can see what all the fuss was about.

Now available: Good Bones by Brooke Allen.

Brooke Allen is not just America’s finest literary critic. She is also our most delightful. In this new collection of essays from the New York Times, the Atlantic, the New Criterion and elsewhere, she trains her wry sensibility and casual brilliance on some of the most interesting and important figures from the great age of reading—a time, just now behind us, when books were of paramount importance and nearly everyone, it seemed, actually read them.
