In today’s fast-paced hustle culture, it can be increasingly difficult to carve out extra time in your day to practice mindfulness and meditation. Finding these little moments of peace, however, are an essential part of self-care. That’s why we like to try and find small, everyday tasks that we’re already doing, and turn them into mini rituals that ground us in the present moment, even if it’s just for a minute or two.
Take your morning cup of coffee, for example. By practicing mindfulness while preparing that first, rejuvenating cup of hot coffee, you can start your day with intention and peace of mind. Pay full attention to each step of the process, no matter what your favorite method of brewing is. Engage all of your senses. Listen to each sound in the process, the drip of water, the crunch of sugar, the sound of the metal spoon hitting the glass walls of the mug as you stir… Smell the rich aroma of the coffee as the water pours through it. See the warm, smooth color as it splashes into the mug, watch the steam rise and curl into the air above it. Savor the delicious taste on your tongue as you take that first sip…
Breathe deeply, and try to just be fully in the moment, just in the time it takes to prepare and drink your morning cup of coffee. Appreciate it for the warmth and happiness it brings you. Do each step deliberately, with full focus and intent. It may not seem like much on its own, but by reclaiming even the simplest of everyday tasks, we can transform them into rituals of purpose and peace of mind.
