AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings has been named an EPIC Award winner at this year’s IBEX Show, setting the benchmark for training excellence in the marine industry.

🏆 The EPIC Awards — curated by Soundings Trade Only — honor organizations driving innovation, leadership, and positive impact across the marine world!

AkzoNobel earned top recognition in the Training category for its Yacht Paint Application Center (YPAC) on Australia’s Gold Coast — a state-of-the-art facility delivering world-class hands-on and virtual training for professionals across the region.

💡 The company’s Virtual Reality (VR) Spray Gun technology is transforming how expertise is shared — eliminating paint waste while giving trainees an immersive, real-world experience.

From the Gold Coast to Florida, AkzoNobel’s dedication to education, innovation, and sustainability continues to raise the bar for the global yacht coatings industry.

🗣️ “We’re proud to have our training excellence recognized by the EPIC Awards,” says Lucy Cater, Regional Marketing Manager, North America. “This inspires us to keep setting new standards of innovation and craftsmanship.”

Now in its 66th year, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show once again proved why it remains the largest in-water boat show in the world, spanning seven iconic locations across Fort Lauderdale and showcasing vessels of every shape and size — including a record number of catamarans.

📍 A highlight of 2025 was the grand reopening of Pier Sixty-Six, a historic waterfront destination that once again served as a centerpiece of the show.

This year also marked the first-ever Honours Awards held in Fort Lauderdale, an event traditionally hosted in Monaco, celebrating leaders in ocean and yachting stewardship.
🏆 The Bowspirit Award honourees:
• Angela Abshier — Founder of Sail to Shelter (USA)
• Francisca Cortés Solari — Founder of Fundación MERI (Chile)
• Rosie O’Donnell — Project Lead for Yachts for Science (UK)

From superyachts to sport boats, next-gen tech to family fun — FLIBS brought it all together.

From record-smashing races to stormy slogs, this year’s Chicago and Bayview Mackinac Races had it all — light winds, lightning, and legends.

Heartbreaker’s crew took line honors at sunrise, Madcap’s all-women team made history, and boats like Fast Tango and Moxie proved that the Great Lakes never hand out easy miles.

Never Stuck at the Dock Again! ⚡️

Nothing kills a day on the water faster than a dead battery. Captain Doug Sabin of Lake Erie Island Runners knows that feeling all too well — until he discovered the KBi KAPower Starting Module systems.

These supercapacitor-based devices deliver instant power when you need it most, giving your boat’s engine the boost to start even when your battery says “nope.” Whether you’re running a single outboard or twin 350s like Capt. Doug’s 32-foot Regulator, the KSM and KSM Kompact™ keep you ready to roll out without the worry.

With over a million life cycles and zero maintenance, these systems are built to outlast your batteries — and maybe even your boat.

Our Story

Great Lakes Scuttlebutt is a bi-monthly, free magazine distributed at 1500+ locations along the US and Canadian coastlines of the Great Lakes. Our business aims to provide Great Lakes boaters of all types a source for information, products, services, and adventures that are all relevant to them as freshwater, Great Lakes boaters.

Five of our six annual issues feature a “Destination” for each of the Great Lakes - that means 25 amazing, boating-friendly places highlighted each year! Every business found inside is pertinent to Great Lakes boaters either because they are located on the shores of the Great Lakes or because they offer services to the Great Lakes area at large. Finally, you will always find fishing reports and articles, sailing stories, classified/used boats, and all the latest news on the Great Lakes in every issue.

What started as a black and white newspaper-style publication back in 1992 has grown into what you see now all through the support of our advertisers (keeping us free!) and our readers (keeping them advertising!)

We don’t ask for your money or your email address; we don’t share or sell your name or your demographics; we don’t lock out our news, events, and resources in exchange for anything from you.
