Midnight Star was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky. The group was signed to Dick Griffey's SOLAR (Sound of Los Angeles Records) label after a 1978 New York City showcase, releasing their debut album The Beginning in 1980.
The original or classic lineup included members who met at Kentucky State University. The band members and their associated cities are: Reggie Calloway (Cincinnati, OH), Belinda Lipscomb (Louisville, KY), Melvin Gentry (Flint, MI), Bo Watson (Flint, MI), Kenneth Gant (Louisville, KY), Bill Simmons (Indianapolis, IN), and Jeff Cooper (Indianapolis, IN). Vincent Calloway (Trombone) joined later from Cincinnati, OH, and Bobby Lovelace (Drums) joined in late 1982. Midnight Star signed with SOLAR Records in 1978 and released their debut album The Beginning in 1980. Their breakthrough album, No Parking on the Dance Floor, was released in 1983.

Midnight Star, a pioneering force in electro-funk and R&B, dominated the 1980s with their futuristic synths and vocoder-heavy hits. Here are 10 of their most iconic and top-charting songs, as featured on Spotify and Apple Music:
No Parking (On the Dance Floor): The title track of their multi-platinum 1983 album, this song became a defining anthem for the group.
Operator: A #1 R&B hit from the Planetary Invasion album, famous for its high-energy production and telephonic theme.
Midas Touch: One of their most enduring international hits, this 1986 track struck gold with its smooth, infectious groove.
Freak-A-Zoid: An early 80s electro-funk staple that remains a fan favorite for its signature robotic vocals.
Curious: A "sizzling" mid-tempo track that climbed the charts alongside "Operator" in the mid-80s.
Wet My Whistle: A high-energy dance track known for its catchy hook and prominent synth lines.
Slow Jam: A foundational R&B ballad that helped define the "quiet storm" subgenre.
Headlines: The title track of their 1986 album, which continued their streak of chart-topping success.
Electricity: A standout track that highlights the group's pioneering use of electronic sounds in funk.
Don't Rock the Boat: A late-80s hit featuring Ecstacy of Whodini, blending their funk roots with emerging hip-hop influences.
