He bought his first boat for $1... and never looked back.

Raised in Byron Bay, Australia, Sage has been living life on the water since he was 11 years old. Learning from his father's ocean adventures, he grew up with saltwater in his veins and a deep connection to life at sea. By 19, he had purchased his first boat for just $1 (yes, really ๐Ÿ˜ณ) and began creating films focused on conservation, adventure, and the lessons only the ocean can teach.

At just 27 years old, Sage is already chasing horizons aboard Billabong, a 1977 Magpie 34 with decades of sailing history behind her. And she's no ordinary sailboat. Billabong competed in 10 consecutive Sydney to Hobart races between 1977 and 1988, missing just one year, and was both designed and skippered by the legendary Peter Joubert.

When he's not chasing good weather and quiet anchorages along Australia's east coast, you'll find Sage freediving, spearfishing, exploring remote islands, and sharing the simple beauty of life at sea while documenting the journey along the way.

But the next chapter is already on the horizon.

In just a few months, Sage plans to sell his boats and begin the search for a new vessel overseas. The goal? Sail her home on a long-distance adventure filled with new oceans, new stories, and plenty of salty miles.

Because for Sage, sailing was never a hobby.

It's a way of life.

Fair winds, Sage. We can't wait to see where the next horizon takes you. ๐ŸŒŽโš“

Classic trawler or modern explorer catamaran?

In the May/June issue, George Day of Cruising Odyssey reviews two very different boats designed for cruisers who dream of going farther.

The Aquila 46 represents a newer vision of adventure cruising, blending spacious accommodations, modern technology, and catamaran efficiency into a platform built for extended time on the water.

The Nordic Tug 44 carries on a tradition of practical, long-range cruising with classic styling, impressive range, and a proven workboat heritage.

Both boats are designed to help you explore beyond the horizon. They just take very different paths getting there.

Most sailors dream about the day they'll buy the boat and cast off the lines.

But what if that's actually backwards?

In the May/June Annual Charter issue of Latitudes & Attitudes, James Evenson argues that one of the best investments an aspiring offshore sailor can make isn't buying a boat at all... it's buying experience!

After more than 85,000 miles at sea, James has learned that there's a massive difference between enjoying a charter vacation and being responsible for a vessel hundreds of miles from land. In this article, he explores why sailing with experienced offshore captains and expedition programs can provide the skills, confidence, and reality checks that every future passagemaker needs.

Along the way, he shares insights from respected names in the offshore sailing world including John Kretschmer, 59ยฐ North, Morse Alpha Expeditions, Sail Libra, and Koru Expeditions.

Whether you're dreaming about your first offshore passage or already shopping YachtWorld listings at midnight, this article might just change the order of your plans.

This week we're introducing you to Zac McCreight and his beautiful floating tank, Wabi Sabi!

Wabi Sabi is a 1977 Alajuela 38 cutter rig with a full keel, an 8-foot tiller, and enough character to keep life interesting! Built like a tank and designed to go the distance, she's the perfect partner for the adventure Zac has planned.

Growing up on the water of Long Island before trading coastlines for the mountains of Lake Tahoe, Zac has spent the last several years bouncing between two worlds: snow-capped peaks and open ocean. What started with buying a Catalina 27 at just 19 years old quickly turned into a full-blown sailing obsession!

Since then, he's crewed on boats throughout the U.S. and Caribbean, worked professionally as a captain with , and learned from mentors who eventually helped guide him toward purchasing Wabi Sabi from a fellow captain and friend.

Over the last 7-8 months, Zac has been cruising the Sea of Cortez and Pacific coast of Mexico, collecting the kind of stories that make sailors smile and insurance companies nervous. Spearfishing, remote repairs, blown-up spinnakers, and more than 10 different crew members joining along the way have made for one unforgettable season.

But the adventure is only getting started.

This summer he'll head back to Tahoe to refill the cruising kitty before launching his biggest dream yet: sailing Wabi Sabi from Mexico back to Long Island... by going the long way.

Yep. Around the world. ๐ŸŒŽโ›ต

Now that's the kind of route planning we can get behind!

Be sure to show Zac some Lats & Atts love with a like, follow, and a few words of encouragement as he prepares Wabi Sabi for the adventure of a lifetime!

What if owning a yacht in the Caribbean was more achievable than you think?

The dream is easy to picture: crystal-clear anchorages, steady trade winds, beach days, sunset sails, and the freedom to explore the islands on your own schedule.

But how does charter ownership actually work? Can charter income offset costs? What are the tax advantages? And what should first-time buyers know before taking the plunge?

In the May/June Annual Charter Issue, Sofia Fay of Horizon Yacht Charters takes a deep dive into the realities of Caribbean yacht ownership. From tax-free purchases and charter management programs to maintenance, owner access, and long-term ownership strategies, this article explores whether charter ownership can be a practical pathway to sailing the Caribbean on your own terms.

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Ahoy, matey! Ready to sound less like a landlubber and more like an old salt?

Every cruiser remembers being new. Capt. Ken and Miss Kelly from SV The Crooked Anchor certainly do. In this entertaining and educational article, they break down some of the most common boating terms, sailor slang, and cruising phrases that every boater should know.

Learn why they're called fenders (not bumpers), what it means to be "on the hook," why gossip travels on the "coconut telegraph," and plenty more.

Whether you're dreaming of casting off the dock lines or you've already got a few nautical miles under your belt, you'll probably pick up a new phrase or two.

๐ŸŒฎ Itโ€™s Tuesdayโ€ฆ which means TACOS and TAC! ๐ŸŒฎ

This week, meet Sarah, Will, Hugo, and Kipp aboard Kaia II, proving that sometimes the best plans are the ones that completely get out of hand!

What started as a "letโ€™s sail for a year" dream turned into a 15-year adventure spanning oceans, continents, and now an Atlantic crossing with two young crew members in tow.

From buying their first boat in the Sea of Cortez and selling her in Sydney, to cruising the Mediterranean, crossing the Atlantic, and now exploring the Caribbean aboard their Leopard 46 catamaran, this family has fully embraced life beyond the dock lines!

Perhaps the best part? Hugo and Kipp are growing up with a front-row seat to the world. Their first offshore passage happened while most toddlers were busy mastering juice boxes and nap time!

These days, the crew of Kaia II is island-hopping through the Leeward Islands while working remotely with Hydrovane International Marine and slowly making their way toward the Annapolis Boat Show via the Bahamas and U.S. East Coast.

Proof that sometimes a "one-year plan" turns into the life you were meant to live.

Show Sarah, Will, Hugo, & Kipp some Lats & Atts love in the comments and be sure to give them a follow - .kaia - as they continue their family's cruising adventure!โ›ต๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’™

If you've ever dreamed of living aboard, this edition of Perry's Picks is right up your alley.

In the May/June Charter Issue, legendary yacht designer Robert Perry compares two iconic liveaboard cruisers: the Islander Freeport 41 and the Morgan Out Island 41 Classic.

Both boats were designed with comfort, space, and practicality in mind, but they took very different paths to get there. Perry dives into the layouts, sailing characteristics, tankage, storage, and the features that made these boats favorites among liveaboards and cruisers alike.

And if you're a Freeport or Morgan Out Island owner, you may find yourself nodding along more than once. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A message in a bottle sounds like an old sea taleโ€ฆ until one actually gets found!

Captain Bob Krieg launched 22 message bottles while sailing aboard Scooter during his circumnavigation. Nearly a year later, one of those bottles was recovered during a man-overboard drill aboard the drilling rig Maersk Developer.

Yes, the ocean really said, โ€œHold my beer, Iโ€™ve got a story.โ€
