The Desert Sky Community regrets to announce the passing of Gary Hankins, a passionate enthusiast of Tombstone and the Old West, who had the chance to make his dream a reality by moving to Tombstone in May 2025. As a dedicated member of the DSA community, Gary's absence will be deeply felt, and we extend our most heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones during this difficult period. RIP.

Today’s adventure takes us on a hike to the historic Charleston ghost town in Arizona. Join us as we navigate the desert terrain, cross the San Pedro River, and uncover the resilient adobe ruins of a town that has been abandoned for over 140 years.

In this video, you’ll see:

The Journey: Our trek through the wilderness to reach a site that is only accessible by foot.
The Ruins: A close-up look at the remaining adobe structures, including what might have been Front Street and various 19th-century businesses.
History Unearthed: We share the story of Charleston’s rapid rise in the 1870s, its decline following the flooding of the Tombstone mines, and the 1887 earthquake that sealed its fate.
Hidden Gems: Discovering railroad remnants, old paved roads, and a mysterious brick tunnel.
Whether you're a history buff, an urban explorer, or just love a good desert adventure, Charleston offers a fascinating glimpse into Arizona’s past.
