It’s been 150 years since the most consequential 90 days of the American West!

While we celebrate our nation’s birthday we also tip our hats to the Summer of 1876, where the most pivotal events converged shaping the frontier and ushering in an iconic and uniquely American new era.

It was an honor for Black Barrel Media Co-Founder, Legends of the Old West Podcast Host, and “Summer of 1876” Author Chris Wimmer to share some of those stories in Deadwood, South Dakota where the legend all began.

Thank you to the Historic Adams House, the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission, Deadwood History, Inc., and all the Old West enthusiasts for a fantastic experience and sold-out book signing!

Centuries old American mystery solved!
DNA and unyielding determination have identified the first of 14 unknown Revolutionary War soldiers recovered from South Carolina’s Camden Battlefield in 2022.
Genetic genealogists identified Private John Pumphrey of the 7th Maryland Regiment by matching a tiny piece of DNA from his skull to a living relative whose DNA had been uploaded to a public database.

According to historical and family records, Pumphrey, formerly known as Camden 9B was from Anne Arundel County Maryland and about 13 to 15-years old when he enlisted in the Continental Army.
The young private likely took part in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown in Pennsylvania before moving south to fight in the Battle of Camden in 1780.

Pumphrey and his fellow ‘Camden 14’ were reinterred in 2023 during an historic 3-day reburial ceremony. You can watch parts of that once-in-a-lifetime event in our Mission History Podcast’s special Ep.10 video “Honoring the Fallen.”

RARE FOOTAGE: In 1897 just nine years after Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope launched him into the world of motion pictures gold fever gripped the Klondike. Captivated by the stampede, Edison sent a photographer to the Klondike to record history and capture some of the very first “actuality films” or as we now call them - documentaries. See more footage in a bonus Klondike Gold Rush video now live on the Legends of the Old West YouTube channel – and enjoy episode 3 on your favorite streaming platforms.
