Most folks see a skunk and only think about the smell, but trappers know better. These little black-and-white critters are one of the most fully used furbearers out there. The tails get shipped off for Shtreimels, the traditional Jewish fur hats. The hides go into everything from trim to garments. The fat gets rendered down, the skulls are sold for education and displays, and even the carcasses get ground into predator bait. Nothing goes to waste. And when you see a pile of skunks lined up after a successful run, that’s not just fur, that’s a whole lot of different industries being supplied by one of the most underrated species on the trapline.

What a skunk is worth depends on the one thing everybody notices first: the tail. The more white, the more money. That’s straight from the trappers themselves. And with the fur market bouncing around, a clean, well-striped skunk can bring solid pay whether it’s sold green or tanned. When you look at the hides being fleshed and taken care of, you’re seeing old-school craftsmanship, the kind of work that turns a nuisance animal into a paycheck. Call them pests if you want, but the skunk might just be one of the most economically efficient critters in North America.
