At just fourteen, Emily sat alone on the front porch of her family’s suburban home in Ohio. A worn duffel bag lay by her feet, her phone battery was at 12 percent, and the cold November air bit at her skin. But it wasn’t the weather that made her shake — it was the silence behind the door that had just shut on her.
Just two hours earlier, her mom had found the pregnancy test hidden in a tissue.
She held it up in the kitchen, her face pale.
“You lied to me,” she said quietly.
“How long?”
Emily stood frozen. Not even Carter — the boy she’d been secretly seeing — knew yet.
“Eight weeks,” she whispered.
Her mom looked at Bill, her stepfather, who had just walked in.
There was a heavy pause.
“You’re not keeping it,” her mom said.
Emily blinked. “What?”
“You heard me. And if you think you’re staying here and shaming this family—”
“She’s fourteen,” Bill interrupted. “There need to be consequences.”
Emily opened her mouth to speak, to explain… but nothing came out. Deep down, she knew it wouldn’t matter.
By sunset, she was on the porch.
No yelling. No tears.
Just quiet rejection, stuffed in a bag: two pairs of jeans, a few shirts, her math binder, and a nearly empty bottle of prenatal vitamins she had bought on her own.
With no one else to call, she texted her best friend Jasmine. Then tried to call. No answer. It was a school night.
