Chalcedony nodules - UNLESS there is an actual agate feature, specifically fortification. Some varieties do have limited fortification, which means agate.
So how is it possible one could have fortification and the other doesn't? We can show you a specific native variety of these stones that have actual fortification. Spheroles/oolitic features do not count. Those can be a common feature of chert nodules, which these are actually in the same family. Sedimentary stones from a very widespread formation that covers multiple states in the Midwest. There are many varieties.
So by agate definition, two of the same thing and one can be sedimentary agate while the other is chalcedony. I will show you some cut examples of what I'm talking about this next week.
We don't make a habit of picking these stones up other than for educational purposes or to throw in the landscape.

Black eyes. It's a tube agate. Identified by someone way above my knowledge level. It's good to be friends with key individuals up north (MN, IA, WI). They've been picking a lot longer than I have.
Water-clear calcite or quartz? There's a tiny yellow crystal. It shows water-clear canary yellow in natural sunlight.

I like the old school terminology - Kansan, Nebraskan, Nickerson, Atchison, etc, but there's more. These terms are still significant. Terms abandoned, but still used to describe distinct glacial deposits in NE Kansas. Once you figure out these terms and deposits, you know how to hunt them. Search high or search low? Most people won't pay attention. They'll just walk their spots without even thinking about it.
If you know where you're at and you see specific things, you might start to realize how its special. Not all deposits are the same.
