“Humpback rainbows” refers to rainbows created when sunlight interacts with the water droplets in a humpback whale’s spout, or “blow,” as it exhales, a phenomenon captured in videos and photos of whales breaching the surface. This optical effect occurs when the angle of the sun, the water spray from the whale’s blow, and the observer are all aligned, allowing the water droplets to act as prisms and create a rainbow.
