COMMENTARY | Guest lectures and brown bag events are common on Colgate University’s campus. Each week, different departments host these speakers for presentations and conversations between students and faculty. Not only are the lectures a great way to learn about current events, detailed research and new career interests, but they also connect students and professors outside of the classroom uniquely. Both Colgate students and professors attend to learn, ask questions and engage in thoughtful conversations.

I believe that these events should receive more support from the school — not that the school needs to support more guest speakers or host more events, but that it should instead improve outreach and information to the student body. Colgate does a wonderful job of inviting a wide variety of professionals, including alumni, visiting professors and researchers, with detailed presentations to share their stories. However, attending a guest speaker event outside of one’s major or hearing about any guest speaker for students without declared majors requires more than a quick Google search.

NEWS | Members of Colgate’s Delta Tau chapter of Gamma Phi Beta learned recently that Colgate University will close their house at 72 Broad St., known as “Little Blue,” for summer 2026 and the following fall 2026 semester as part of the Third-Century Plan. The property, located at the end of Willow Path, sits adjacent to “the Loj” at 70 Broad St., where Colgate has already begun renovations under the same initiative.

The move surprised members, leaving them scrambling to adjust their recruitment and housing plans, which they believed were already settled. Junior and Gamma Phi Beta house manager Katie Mathews said the announcement came as a shock to her and complicated her plans for where members will live next year.

“Unfortunately, we have been left in the dark with most of the discussions and decisions surrounding our renovation so far,” Mathews said. “I had to fill a roster of 12 girls to live in Little Blue for the 2026–2027 academic year, only to find out that no one would be able to live in the house that fall. This also obviously has implications for us in terms of recruitment. We all feel frustrated that this was announced so abruptly.”

SPORTS | Colgate University men’s basketball always expects to compete, but that mindset wasn’t enough to deliver a win in the team’s opening week after an 80-69 loss against no. 22-ranked Michigan State University on Nov. 3.

Colgate displayed a strong performance against Michigan State on Nov. 3. The Raiders kept it close, trailing the Spartans by only three points at halftime. After a strong start, the team began to fade in the second half, ending the game with an 11-point deficit and falling short of a massive upset.

Despite the loss, the Raiders came away from the performance with a positive mindset, having proved they can hang with strong opponents.

BAKER’S DOZEN | Most students at Colgate University might have a few questions after hearing about a class called Pirate Rhetoric. What even is Pirate Rhetoric? What could you possibly do in that class? And how do pirates, of all things, relate to contemporary social issues like justice, identity or violence? Professor Robert Mills, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric, explores these questions alongside Colgate students in his unique class.

Mills explained how his educational background inspired him to propose such an abnormal class.

“My Ph.D. is in communication studies … and my specific area is rhetoric. I teach classes that basically ask the question, ‘How does language work when it’s used in the world?’” Mills said. “Pirate Rhetoric is the class that’s most connected to my research interests. I’m currently working on my first book, which is on sovereignty and maritime piracy in the early 19th-century United States, and that’s where that class came from.”

NEWS | Colgate University will offer tuition-free enrollment to families making less than $175,000, beginning in the fall of 2026, the administration announced on Monday, Oct. 27. This announcement comes following an expansion of the Colgate Commitment, the university’s no-loan financial aid initiative.

The decision marks the third time Colgate has expanded its financial accessibility efforts since the inception of the Colgate Commitment in 2020, following updates in 2021 and 2022, which included broader aid packages to cover the average cost of textbooks and other academic expenses.

Gary Ross, senior vice president for admission and financial aid, said that this change reflects Colgate’s broader commitment to supporting students and expanding access.

NEWS | Professor of Art Emeritus Robert McVaugh returned to Colgate University to present original research on the campus’s architectural history on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The talk, delivered to students and former colleagues in the Robert Ho Lecture Room, was the newest entry in the Arts and Humanities Colloquium series.

The presentation was the culmination of a years-long scavenger hunt through Colgate’s archives for misplaced campus architectural records. McVaugh was the first scholar to undertake such a study of Colgate’s architectural history.

COMMENTARY | When I made my first visit to Colgate University for admitted students last spring, I thought eating meals in the dining halls was something I could look forward to. In high school, I tended to bring lunch from home, and when I did get lunch from school, pizza and a single entrée were usually the only options available. With what I had come to expect from school lunches, I was pretty thrilled at the prospect of getting to access a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine for free at every meal. On that first visit, I decided to play it safe with my first meal and ate the pizza at Frank Dining Hall. Little did I know how indicative that would be of my future meal choices at Colgate.

When I officially started at Colgate in August, I did not pay much attention to how I was eating in general. After the meals on my Wilderness Adventure — mostly trail mix and peanut butter and jelly tortillas — I was just happy to be eating proper meals again. My diet consisted mostly of the foods I would get when out with friends back at home like burgers, pizza and of course Coop sushi. At the start, it felt like I was eating at a restaurant every night, getting to choose my favorite foods at every meal. I did not understand why I had heard complaints about the food at Colgate.

NEWS | Protesters congregated on Hamilton’s Broad Street on Saturday, Oct. 18. for the No Kings Day of Defiance. Organized by local Madison County activist groups, the day was part of a nationwide wave of demonstrations against the Trump administration. The protests echoed the last nationwide No Kings movement, which was on June 14, with demonstrators advocating the same core message: rejecting what they described as the concentration of power that President Donald Trump has wielded in his current term.

Rallygoers lined the sidewalk and Hamilton Village Green from 3-4:30 p.m., carrying posters with personalized political messages. Protesters also stood along Broad Street facing traffic, with several signs encouraging passing drivers to honk in support. Tables were set up in the park for attendees to make their own posters if they arrived without one.

‘GATE TAKES 💬 | What do Colgate students have to say about free speech on campus?

In the 2026 College Free Speech Rankings, Colgate received an “F” score and ranked 138 out of 257 universities, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. To see if these scores match what’s on the ground, we asked Colgate students their opinion.

BAKER’S DOZEN | Traditions run deep at Colgate University. From the fraternity houses to the annual rituals celebrated by all, Colgate preserves the long-held traditions that have shaped culture on campus. One tradition that has been kept alive can be heard through the walls of the Theta Chi fraternity house.

For a long time now, music has been one of the cornerstones of the fraternity’s culture. Now this culture is kept alive through the band Moose, a student band rooted in the longstanding musical legacy of Theta Chi.

The members of the band include sophomore Pearson Biggs on bass, senior Will Biggs on rhythm guitar, senior Andrew Kang and junior Hope Hershberg on vocals, senior Bobby Patch on drums and senior Dylan Roelofs on lead guitar.
