COMMENTARY | Many of us have been there: It’s almost 8 a.m., your alarm is screeching at you to get up and for the third time this week, you’re asking yourself, “Should I just skip class this morning?”

For people with 8:30 a.m. classes (or anytime before, for that matter), this is an all-too-well-known cycle.

According to many Colgate University students I’ve talked to, 8:30 a.m. classes are dreadful — only made worse by the fact that, for most of the school year, they require trudging through snow and freezing temperatures before most of their peers have even snoozed their alarm. If your roommate doesn’t have class, you’re getting ready in the dark, praying that you don’t wake them up with your not-so-silent shuffling. If you don’t have friends in the class with you, you’re doing this process alone, praying that you’ll at least get your normal seat without looking like you woke up twenty minutes ago — even though you probably did.

NEWS | Almost two and a half years after its intended opening date, the Copper Cricket Diner is set to open on 107 Utica Street next month. Owner of the Copper Cricket and the Ye Olde Pizza Pub Aaron Toomath is putting the finishing touches on what he hopes is a welcome addition to Hamilton restaurants.

According to Toomath, the diner will be open seven days a week and will serve breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Around May, Toomath intends to add a dinner menu and extend closing hours to either 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.

“We’re all done with the construction,” said Toomath, adding that he tried to do as much of the construction as he could himself. “We’re pretty much ready to open up — we’re just at the point where we get to start bringing in some food and training people.”

NEWS | Colgate University sophomore Aastha Ghimire is spearheading a new housing option on Broad Street dedicated to mindfulness and meditation for the 2025-2026 school year. Along with Ferdinand von Muench, lecturer in university studies, Ghimire hopes this new housing will positively impact students by decreasing their stress levels and creating a close community of like-minded students.

Ghimire was inspired to create a mindfulness and meditation housing option for upperclassmen students after struggling to find a place in her residential building to practice yoga her freshman year. This past summer, she became a certified yoga teacher and got involved in wellness activities at Chapel House, Colgate’s wellness retreat at the top of the hill.

SPORTS | Colgate University’s men’s lacrosse team began their highly anticipated 2025 season with a 14-9 loss to then-No. 12 Penn State University on Saturday, Feb. 1. Although the Nittany Lions pulled away during the second and third quarters – holding a 13-6 lead entering the fourth – the Raiders played a close game in the first quarter and eventually pushed for a late comeback. At times, they exhibited flashes of the fast paced, disciplined lacrosse that the Raiders and fans expect for the season.

The loss to Penn State is the beginning of the Raiders’ incredibly competitive out-of-conference schedule. They battle several top-ranked programs, including No. 4 University of Virginia, No. 31 University of Albany, No. 20 Harvard University and No. 19 Villanova University. Colgate will also compete with No. 5 Syracuse University for a mid-season juncture (all rankings are up-to-date as of Feb. 11). The team is certainly not shying away from competition. Head Coach Matt Karweck and his team hope to forge a perennial powerhouse and improve upon last season’s success, when they secured their first winning record since 2015.
