Canton Church Summer Events
The Historic Canton Church will continue our Summer Schedule of Events on July 18 at 5:00 pm with Mary Bradford as “Jeanette Rankin” and on July 25 at 5:00 Victor Sample will talk about the Butte Copper Kings and their ties to Broadwater County.
As always the events are free – although we do accept donations!
On July 18, Mary Bradford will bring Jeanette Rankin to the Canton Church. Mary is a talented historic interpreter and scholar who brings history to life for audiences of all ages. She is an artist in residence for the C. M. Russel Museum in Great Falls and the Montana Historical Society in Helena.
Jeannette Rankin was an American politician and women's rights advocate who became the first woman to hold federal office in the United States. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from Montana in 1916 for one term, then was elected again in 1940. Rankin remains the only woman ever elected to Congress from Montana.
The three men known as the Butte Copper Kings became enormously wealthy from the Butte copper mines. At one time, the Wall Street Journal named William A Clark of Butte, Montana as the wealthiest man in the United States.
On July 25, local resident Victor Sample will tell a fascinating tale of 2 of the Copper Kings and their ties to Broadwater County and one of the most infamous political events in United States history. Mostly fact and a little speculation, the tale highlights Montana politics at the turn of the 20th century.
