Rich Brauer’s new Hitchcock style movie ‘The DJ on Wallaker Hill’ that was shot in northern Michigan during a raging winter blizzard in February, is now ready for its first public viewing! The Garden Theater in Frankfort is hosting this special event on December 28th at 7:30pm. https://gardentheater.org/upcoming-events
Brauer will be on hand for a Q&A following the 90 minute film. It would likely have a PG-13 rating.
Interior filming was on a set built to replicate a 1963 AM radio station. The set was constructed by nine students from the CONSTRUCTION TRADES curriculum at the Northwest Education Services Career Tech. “Giving students the chance to work on different aspects of film production is a critical part of our normal protocol’ says writer/director Rich Brauer. “We also had four students from their FILM AND NEW MEDIA department on set during filming to assist our professional crew. Mentoring was everywhere!”
Brauer has produced and directed ten feature films, all shot in northern Michigan. Brauer adds “Not only do we make a movie, but we make a lot of friends”. Brauer was named Michigan Filmmaker of the year in 2009. A portion of the proceeds from this screening will be donated to COGNITION, Beulah’s Science and Discovery Center. The Story:
The DJ on Wallaker Hill
It’s Christmas eve, 1963. A winter blizzard rages outside the tiny hilltop radio station in Michigan’s remote upper peninsula. The lone DJ just wants to finish his shift at midnight and go home.
Things change when the telephone repairman appears. The DJ tries his best to ignore him, which is increasingly difficult since the man won’t leave.
The drama that follows, contained within the cramped walls of the station, unravels the challenge that making the distinction between citizen and criminal can be a difficult and perhaps impossible task.
Johnny gets more for Christmas than he bargained for.

Hey everyone! My land stewardship drama was selected to be part of this 'Made in Michigan' series. Should be especially cool because of the support from the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and the Leelanau Conservancy. A lively Q & A will follow. In case you haven't heard, we're hosting a one-time public screening of our latest feature film "FROZEN STUPID2:OPEN WATER' this coming Wednesday at the glorious State Theater in Traverse City at 7pm. It's a fun comedy based on obsessive fishermen who against all odds, find loving support from their community of friends and wives. We know him in these parts as the writer, director, and producer of the exciting Dogman movies. But storytelling is the actual passion that drives a Brauer Productions, Inc. project—and Dogman is only one of many stories that local filmmaker Rich Brauer has told through his lens.

And it all started here in Benzie County a few decades ago...

“I had just finished 6th grade and was in Beulah for the summer,” he recalls. “I watched a great movie, 'The Blue Max,' at the Crystal Theater [now a vacant lot] and was inspired to become a filmmaker right then and there.”
