October 10: On this date 55 years ago, the Detroit Tigers won the 1968 World Series. And the city, which had lost the AL pennant on the last day of the season the previous year and experienced some of the worst rioting in its streets that same “Long Hot Summer of 1967” erupted in pure joy and pandemonium.

In order to accomplish the task, the Tigers had to win the pennant, and they did so with 31-game winner Denny McLain, who later won the American League MVP award. Following up “The Maestro of the Mound” in the AL MVP voting were Bill Freehan (2nd), Willie Horton (4th), Dick McAuliffe (7th), Jim Northrup (13th), and Mickey Stanley (25th). And in 1968, “The Year of the Pitcher,” Northrup hit four grand slams, two of which were on consecutive pitches during a game in June; the “Silver Fox” added another grand slam for good measure in Game 6 of the World Series. Freehan and Horton were Detroit natives; Stanley from Grand Rapids.

The Tigers also had to beat the heavily favored St. Louis Cardinals team that included Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Curt Flood, and many other talented players. Gibson’s remarkable 1.12 earned run average that season remains the modern major league record.

Strikeout specialist Mickey Lolich won his third complete-game victory of the series in Game 7, and for that he was voted the World Series MVP. Earl Wilson, Joe Sparma, and John Hiller were other leaders of the pitching staff.

The deciding Game 7 went into the 7th inning with no score, thanks largely to Lolich picking off both Brock and Flood in the 6th inning. After 2 were out in the Tigers’ half of the 7th inning, Gibson gave up singles to Norm Cash and Willie Horton. Northrup then hit a triple over the head of centerfielder Flood to score Cash and Horton. Freehan then doubled in Northrup. Third baseman Don Wert added an RBI single in the 9th, to make the final score 4-1.

One big key to the Tigers victory was manager Mayo Smith asking outfielder Mickey Stanley to play shortstop during the World Series in place of Ray Oyler, a very reliable fielder but light hitter. Moving Stanley to shortstop allowed Horton, Northrup, and Kaline all to play in the series, and all three outfielders made key hits or fielding plays in the Tigers’ world championship.

Today in 1994 Lake Superior was Frozen Over Completely

On February 7, 1994, satellite images showed that Lake Superior had completely frozen over, although the lake’s center showed a very thin layer of ice that covered the water. The pictures appeared to settle the debate about whether the largest lake in the Great Lakes could ever completely freeze over.

Three consecutive days in which temperatures never broke 0 degrees combined with a 1.3-degree average daily temp in Marquette for January set the stage for a 50-day cold snap.

However, high winds the next day broke up the thin ice over the middle of the lake, quickly exposing open water.

The mugs were heavy and covered with thin frost. The sacred nectar within was so cold, your lips broke through a thin layer of ice. This was the holy grail of hot summer days, the only drug our innocence desired, and it was euphoria to realize, your dad had taken you there. Your heart pounded as the tray was secured on the driver's window. You couldn't wait to hold your mug and savor the sweet nectar found on a Michigan summer day. by. Rik Cryderman
