August 3rd– Public Health Announces Twenty-Four Additional Cases in Las Animas County and Three Additional Cases in Huerfano County

(August 3, 2021)- Public Health has confirmed twenty-four new positive cases of COVID-19 in Las Animas County and three additional COVID-19 cases in Huerfano County. As of today, Huerfano County has a total case count of 479 with 7 active cases and 18 deaths. Las Animas County has a total case count of 1304 with 63 active cases and 14 deaths.

The 24 cases in Las Animas County include juveniles and individuals ranging from their teens to their 90’s.

The 3 cases in Huerfano County include individuals ranging from their 20’s to their 60’s.

COVID-19 Variants have been identified in both Huerfano and Las Animas County. The variants below
will be updated as we see the genome sequencing updated from CDPHE. Whole genome sequencing can
take up to two weeks for confirmation of a variant.

Huerfano County COVID-19 Variants identified are: 20 cases of the B117/UK variant of concern, 1 of the B.1.427/B.1.429/ California variant of concern and 4 of the B.1.526.2/New York variant of concern.

Las Animas County COVID-19 Variants identified are: 1 case of the B.1.351/ South African variant of concern, 7 cases of the B.1.526.2/New York variant of concern, 15 of the B117/UK variant of concern and 35 cases of the B.1.617.2/Delta variant of concern.

COVID-19 continues to increase in both Las Animas and Huerfano Counties. The Delta Variant is on
the rise in Las Animas County. The Delta Variant seems to spread more easily and quickly than other
variants, which may lead to more cases of COVID-19.

Take steps to protect yourself and your family from the virus:

1. Get vaccinated;
2. Stay home if sick or someone in your household is sick;
3. Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms;
4. Wash your hands;
5. Respect the COVID-19 safety protocols for any individual business or organization;
6. Physically distance if unvaccinated, and;
7. Wear a mask indoors and in crowded outdoors spaces regardless of vaccination status.
8. Fourth Amended Colorado Public Health Order 20-38 is in effect until September 1st.

Las Animas and Huerfano Counties still have low vaccination rates, we are seeing increasing COVID-19 transmission among unvaccinated individuals, especially as the Delta variant spreads. We encourage people who are unvaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible and to wear a mask until you are fully vaccinated.

04/17/2021

April 16, 2021- Las Animas Huerfano Counties District Health st Department Board of Health Extends the COVID-19 Dial until May 1 .
At the April 15th, Special Board of Health meeting it was recommended by the LAHCDHD Board of Health to extend the COVID-19 Dial until May 1st. The PHO Order will become effective at 12:00 a.m.
on April 17, 2021, and end at 12:00 a.m. on May 1, 2021.
As of April 7, 2021, there are 51 known positive cases in Las Animas and Huerfano Counties; and there is evidence of the spread of more contagious and, potentially, more severe variant strains as well. With cases going up and low COVID-19 vaccine rates, Las Animas Huerfano Counties District Health Department Board of Health believes it is necessary to remain cautious for a brief period of time until more people are vaccinated and cases decrease.
The LAHCDHD Public Health Order (PHO) will be in effect from April 16 through May 1, and highlights of the Public Health Order include:
 Las Animas County will remain in Level Blue.
 Huerfano County will remain in Level Green.
 State’s mask-wearing requirements as described in Executive Order D 2021 079 shall
continue until May 3, 2021 (Applies to both County’s).
As more and more of our residents are protected by one of the safe and highly effective COVID-19 vaccines now available, we are hopeful that we will be successful in our race between the emerging variant strains of virus and vaccination, and that we will be able to fully re-open in the near future. However, as the agency responsible for protecting public health in our counties, we will monitor our progress and re- evaluate when needed.
To enhance personal safety and help reduce levels of COVID-19 transmission across our communities, residents should continue to social distance; wear masks in public indoor areas; avoid large gatherings or crowds, especially indoors; stay home while they are sick and get tested for COVID-19 if they have symptoms; wash their hands often; and get vaccinated as soon as possible.
COVID-19 Vaccine is open to anyone 16yrs and older. If you or someone you know is interested in getting the vaccine, you can go to the Vaccine Registration Form Online https://la-h-health.stg.colorado.gov/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine or call for an appointment at 719- 846- 2213 in Las Animas County or 719-738-2650 Huerfano County.

March 19th, Update – Public Health Announces Four Additional Cases in Las Animas County and No New Additional Cases in Huerfano County

(March 19, 2021)- Public Health has confirmed four new positive cases of COVID-19 in Las Animas County and no new additional COVID-19 cases in Huerfano County. As of today, Huerfano County has a total case count of 338 with 12 active cases and 18 deaths. Las Animas County has a total case count of 1038 with 25 active cases and 11 deaths.

The 4 cases in Las Animas County include individuals in their teen’s ranging up to their 20’s.
Public health nurses are continuing case investigations and are notifying those in close contact.

Colorado’s COVID-19 cases involving variants are increasing, scientists with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced Thursday.

The variants are concerning because there’s evidence they could be more transmissible and cause a more severe disease. Currently, CDPHE has discovered at least 225 cases of the Southern California variant, 336 cases of the United Kingdom variant and 11 of the South Africa variant. The state has not confirmed any cases of the Brazil variant.

When it’s your turn, and you choose to get the vaccine, you’ll know you’ve helped protect yourself and
others -- and that you’re doing your part to help end the crisis caused by the pandemic, to save lives,
and to help our state recover.

We need everyone to keep following public health protocols until the vaccine is widely available and
used, and we achieve community immunity. Wear masks, avoid gatherings, stay home when you’re sick, wash your hands, and maintain physical distance when you must go out. Taking all the safety steps
together helps better protect both those closest to us and our entire community from COVID-19.
