What the flock is going on around Troy? 🎥🫟

Several downtown businesses, city vehicles, and Troy City Hall were spray painted overnight with messages tied to the city’s ongoing debate over Flock license plate reader cameras.

The controversy surrounding Flock cameras has become one of Troy’s biggest political fights this year, with ongoing lawsuits, protests, and debates over privacy, surveillance, and public safety. City officials condemned the vandalism, while Troy police say the investigation is ongoing.

Troy’s battle over Flock surveillance cameras is heading to court ⚖️🎥

The Troy City Council has filed a lawsuit against Mayor Carmella Mantello over her emergency order to keep the city’s Flock license plate reader cameras active. Supporters say the cameras help police solve crimes and track suspects, while critics have raised concerns over privacy, data sharing, and government overreach. The lawsuit could shape how surveillance technology is regulated in Troy moving forward.

On this day in Troy history: The Great Fire of 1862 🚒

On May 10 1862, one of the most devastating fires in Troy’s history broke out on Congress Street inside a hay and feed store. Fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, the fire spread rapidly and burned for nearly 24 hours.

By the time it was over, roughly 75 acres and more than 500 buildings had been destroyed, causing an estimated $10 million in damages. Entire blocks of homes, businesses, and major institutions were lost, making it one of the costliest fires in America at the time. While the exact cause was never confirmed, many believed it started from a discarded cigarette.

In the aftermath, Troy introduced major fire prevention measures, including updated building codes, fire hydrants, and expanded water mains throughout the city.

Despite the destruction, Troy rebuilt and the city’s economy eventually recovered.
