Attic Classic: The band TERROR CAKE was a fiercely original feminist punk band that emerged from Albany’s late-'80s underground punk scene. Known for their chaotic energy, sharp wit, and sardonic lyrics, the band blended elements of punk, noise rock, and performance art. Fronted by vocalist and visual artist Sarah Paul in a male dominated hardcore music scene, TERROR CAKE challenged gender norms and mainstream aesthetics through both their sound and image, becoming a staple in underground venues and art spaces.

In 1991, the band released their debut 7-inch vinyl on Footlong Records. Known as 'The Jumbo Jet Star EP' - taken from the graphics and print on the records inner sleeve - the four-track EP captured their angular guitar work, aggressive rhythms, and biting social commentary. The record's lo-fi production and fusion of noise-punk aggression with feminist and surrealist lyrics earned attention within the DIY punk and 'zine culture of the time.

TERROR CAKE and Sarah Paul certainly left an indelible mark on the region’s underground punk and q***r performance art communities as a gritty, uncompromising voice — short-lived but undeniably influential.

The first track on that EP is the Local 518 Attic Classic - "I Know."

ATTIC CLASSIC: It was certainly a shock when Tom Healey passed away back in July 2014. For 28 years he taught history and social studies at Albany High School, and had only just retired a month prior. And as left-hand guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader of the Tom Healey Band, he had played what turned out to be his last show in Vermont that previous weekend. The Watervliet native is still remembered for his warm demeanor, passion for music, and dedication to his students.

His legacy lives on not only through the positive impact he had on the community, but also his music. He founded and led his band, in one form or another, for over thirty years. Known for blues-rock originals and roots-rocking covers that touched on funk, jazz, and a bit of country, his band had released two albums: the highly acclaimed debut 'Pearl Street' in 2001, and 'Tough Dog' in 2005 which solidified the idea that the Tom Healey Band was the Capital Region's premiere blues band.

In 2005 the band won the Northeast Blues Society playoff, which led to their appearance at the International Blues competition in Memphis. Then in 2012 Tom was inducted into the New York State Blues Hall of Fame. That was followed in 2013 when the band won the Downtown Albany Blues Music Competition and as a result, headlined an Alive at Five concert.

Besides the many shows he performed in the area and beyond over the years, at least there's still videos and recordings to remember him by. The Attic Classic is "Meanass," the opening track for the ‘Pearl Street’ album.

At 9:30pm 🕧 listen to a with singer-songwriter Simon Elijah followed by a song with The Sketchy Indians ("All You Need") to fill out the hour.

Attic Classic: Amy Abdou emerged as a distinct voice in the Albany music scene leading the innovative and eclectic Hand Held Moon. The band’s 1991 cassette EP 'Lunaception' was praised by critics, but the band was short lived. Musically, she then turned her attention to becoming a solo artist, recording her first full-length album "Beneath the Grass." She enlisted members of the band Iky Mo and local jazz guitarist George Muscatello to help bring her dark, melodic and complex songs to life.

The 1992 album marked Amy's arrival as a serious artist. Each of the nine songs arrangements put together powerful combinations of poetic lyricism, the blended dynamics of differing music styles, with it all held together by an intimate, haunting vocal delivery that hinted at both vulnerability and strength.

The first track on the album "Stay" is the Attic Classic.

Attic Classic: The Attic Classic band Rocky Velvet was a high-octane rockabilly and roots rock band. Formed in 1996 on the outskirts of Troy in Cropseyville by a quartet of young men just out of high school, the guys created their signature vintage sound by channeling the energy of 1950s rock ’n’ roll with a modern roots-rock twist.

Across the early 2000s, Rocky Velvet built a loyal following through dynamic live shows at local venues, as an opening act, and performances at regional festivals, earning a reputation as one of the premier rockabilly revival acts.

They released 'Too Much Fun' - a four-track seven-inch record, on blue vinyl no less - for Cacophone Records in 1997. But with some band member change-outs and a few dormant periods, it took until 2007 for the band to release their long-awaited, mythical debut full-length disc 'It Came From Cropseyville!' The album blended originals with older rockers, capturing the band's tight musicianship, retro tones, and playful energy.

The Attic Classic "Poor Poor Lonely Me" is one of the Rocky Velvet tunes on that disc.

At 9:30pm 🕧 listen to a with Jordan Taylor Hill - he has a new EP 'Diaspora' featuring 4 tracks of Afro‑diasporic rhythm and story. Then songs by Amélie ("Strangled Defenses (ft. Benjamin Morren)") + Stellar Young ("Wait") + Annie Scherer ("Dead Sea") + Annie & the Hedonists ("In My Girlish Days") fill out the hour

ATTIC CLASSIC: Mitch Elrod began a decades-long musical journey in his teens in his home state of Georgia. After playing in regional bands around the Atlanta area, he joined blues/rock artist Ellen McIlwaine on bass in the early 1980’s, then left her band to form his own while continuing his study of songwriting and guitar.

By the late ’80s, Mitch had made his way to the Capital Region, putting down roots in the area music scene. Working and performing with many musicians, he formed a series of bands with them until, ultimately Mitch Elrod’s Swim Team came to be. Definitely not a sports team, it was rather a group dedicated to experiments in blending blues, rock, jazz, and other music styles via improvisation in compelling live and studio formats.

In 1993, Mitch released the band’s debut CD 'The Muse of Intent' produced by Kevin Bartlett Fan Page on the Aural Gratification label. Recorded with rich, detailed production, the album showcased Elrod’s thoughtful songwriting and genre-fusing arrangements, marking a polished and confident first recording for the Swim Team.

The Attic Classic is "Technical No How," the first track off this album’s unique blend of musical styles.

At 9:30pm 🕧 listen to a with Annie & the Hedonists which fills out the hour - They start the festivities for the Music Haven Concert Series Blues BBQ party this Sunday Aug 3rd from 5-9:30p with Rick Estrin and The Nightcats and Selwyn Birchwood

Attic Classic: Saratoga Springs native Gary Brooks had an extensive 50-years plus music career. So busy that it took 35 years until Gary was able to showcase 11 of his own songs on his 2000 debut CD 'Lost in the Shuffle.' Shortly after that was released, he began recording a second album at keyboardist Tony Perrino's home studio with musical partner Milayne Jackson and a Capital Region all-star roster of musicians.

With both working full-time day jobs and averaging 150 gigs a year, and fitting recording time within the other musician's busy schedules, this second album "only" took six years to complete. Released in late 2006, the album expanded on the rock, soul and R&B featured on the first one to include pop, gospel, and a touch of hip-hop on eleven original tunes and a cover of the ballad "Love Will Keep Us Alive."

Milayne Jackson and Gary Brooks 'Goin' with the Flow' album has the Attic Classic, its second track "Doin' Things I Should."
