ATTIC CLASSIC: Hard rock band Empire State Troopers cruised this state's highways a couple decades ago, calling the Capital District among its many home bases.

Emerging from a gritty, thriving underground rock scene, the band carved out a reputation for their energetic live shows and a raw, authentic sound that blended classic hard rock and metal influences with modern grit. Independent music releases steadily built a catalog that showcased their songwriting prowess and instrumental talents. That, along with a commitment to their local scene and a hard-work ethos earned them respect within the music community.

By 2007 with Nathan Pallace on drums, Thom Hall on guitar, Jeff Fox on bass and the powerful vocals of Kelly Murphy front and center, Empire State Troopers had established themselves as a formidable presence. This lineup's raw energy was captured on their 6-track EP 'Upstate Again' from which the Attic Classic "Dogs Of Odessa" comes from.

Attic Classic: THE SHARKS were a popular Albany-based rhythm-and-blues band, active throughout the '80s and into the 1990's. From their debut at the College of Saint Rose, in which some members have said they were less than prepared for, by the mid-1980s they had become a staple of Albany's live music scene.

Building a strong local following through hundreds of performances at area clubs and venues, their songs were rooted in classic R&B traditions but with a contemporary edge, allowing them to appeal to a broad audience. They featured a killer horn section – sometimes referred to as the Hammerhead Horns – which sat in with other local bands when the need arose. Known for tight musicianship and engaging live shows, they were often asked to open for or share a stage with national touring acts.

In 1985, the album 'Seven Deadly Fins' was released on Albany's own Blotto Records, capturing The Sharks in their mid-1980s R&B groove, with well-crafted arrangements, commanding vocals, and the band's solid instrumental foundation.

From that album is "Too Good For Words" as the Local 518 Attic Classic.

At 9:30pm πŸ•§ listen to a with dream-pop grunge brother sister duo Reality Distortion (formerly Bathrobe Robots). Followed by a song or two which fills out the hour.

ATTIC CLASSIC: The story of SIRSY began in an unexpected setting: auditions for a cover band. It was here that Melanie Krahmer and Rich Libutti made the final connection which laid the foundation for a musical - and eventually romantic - partnership that has been ongoing for over 25 years.

Melanie's interest in music began as a preschooler, singing with her pianist father. While in college, her band The Milkweeds recorded some songs which were included on a CD compilation, and the band received some national attention. Rich mainly focused on playing bass while in college, but soon caught the recording bug. He started his own studio and got to engineer, produce, and play bass on several local projects, honing his songwriting skills in the process.

When Melanie formed the group 'nobody' with local songwriter and guitarist Dave Malachowski, it was also one of the musical projects Rich was involved in. The two soon decided to form a musical partnership, after helping to form a successful, but short-lived cover band.

With Mel on vocals, flute, & percussion and Rich on guitar & bass, they named their duo 'sirsy,' Mel's childhood nickname given by her younger sister who couldn't quite pronounce "sister."

By 2000 their acoustic duo had evolved into a full-fledged live touring act, with a debut full-length CD titled 'Baggage' highlighting Mel's powerful vocals and songs crafted with catchy melodies. The album was a key step in establishing Sirsy’s original sound, setting the stage for what has become a very long career.

The Attic Classic is a track from 'Baggage,' "This Time."

At 9:30pm πŸ•§ listen to a with Local 518 songwriter & artist Francis Davies (of the duo Question of the Century) followed by songs with TR Remsen ("Will You") + Daniel Johnson ("The Deep End") + The Matchstick Architects ("Everyday") to fill out the hour.

ATTIC CLASSIC: Gordon Grey, pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, has had a music career which spans decades. Beginning in the early 1970s and up to the mid-1990's, after which his live performances wound down, Gordon could be found performing at just about all the area's popular venues.

Back in 1982, he released his vinyl LP 'Grey Matter.' Recorded by Art Snay at Arabellum Studio in Albany, the album's eight tracks reflect Gordon's signature heartfelt songwriting blended with rock, pop, and folk with stylistic leanings toward psychedelic and folk‑rock. Here is something you might find interesting: with cover art designed and drawn by Gordon, the LP exists with two distinct album jacket colors - one in a light grey color (of course!), another with an orange cover variant (why not!).

The Attic Classic is "You Gotta Watch Out" - the first track from the record with the grey-colored album cover.

At 9:30pm πŸ•§ listen to a with Americana singer-songwriter Maggie Doherty - she brought Chris Carey of Millstone Studio to play along. Her EP 'Night Words' has just been released.
