Nearly 20 years ago, I went on what was then the longest camping trip of my life -- five nights at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was October, and the seasonably sporadic weather promised mixtures of snow, rain, sunshine, and bitter cold. All around my three friends and me were trees stripped of their autumn leaves, and miles of trails and exotic scenery to explore.
One other thing that surrounded us the entire time there was isolation.
The first night at Pictured Rocks would change the way I looked at the outdoors forever. In the darkest hours of the evening, we heard the wolves begin howling. First one, then more. They were close to us, frenzied and unnerving. Alone in my one-man tent, I listened -- in the otherwise quiet of the woods, I had no choice to, but I also wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. There was a fascination I couldn’t let go of.
The next morning, my buddies and I walked out onto the nearby beach, which pressed up against Lake Superior. There, in the middle of hundreds of wolf prints in the sand was a decimated deer carcass.
