It was a gorgeous late summer morning, 25 years ago, and so much changed in an instant. We’ll mark the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 on WMHT with music to speak to the moment and to our feelings about the moment. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings has become a national anthem for mourning in this country – we’ll play it at 8:47am, the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

And then two Requiems, in their entirety. Mozart’s Requiem on the 9 o’clock Mozart, and the beloved Fauré in the 7pm hour. Plus, trace a journey from war to mysticism with Gustav Holst’s suite The Planets on the Big 1@1.

Never Forget. Your Classical Companion, 89.1 and 88.7 WMHT and classicalwmht.org

🎂 Happy birthday to Dora Pejačević!

Revered in Croatia as the mother of Croatian music – she wrote the first Croatian concerto, the first Croatian symphony – this astonishing woman, affectionally known as “Countess Dora”, is also beloved in Croatia for her service in the First World War when she could so easily have rested on the laurels of her aristocratic privilege. The whole nation celebrates her birthday, especially so because there were tragically all too few of them.

Listen to her feature as part of our Women's History Month podcast: https://www.classicalwmht.org/2026-03-14/dora-pejacevic

🎂 Happy birthday to Antonin Dvořák!

Considered by many to be the greatest Czech composer and one of the greatest and most popular of all composers. He began his studies at the Prague Organ School at just 16 years old. At 20, he joined the National Theatre in Prague as a violist. He seemed to have an endless supply of beautiful melodies.

His well known works include the American Quartet, two sets of Slavonic Dances, and 9 Symphonies, including his last, "From the New World."

Today, we celebrate his life and music!
