For many athletes, the cost of participating in sports can already be daunting, with expenses ranging from lift tickets, race fees and equipment upgrades. For adaptive athletes, however, simply obtaining the specialized equipment needed to reach the trailhead, ski slope or starting line can cost tens of thousands of dollars more, creating barriers that can make returning to sport feel out of reach.

“We are proud to announce the expansion of our rate relief program,” said Sue Daniels, President of the NTPUD Board of Directors. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure essential water and wastewater services remain affordable for local residents who need assistance the most.”

Tier 1 of the program now provides a monthly credit of $80 off a combined water and wastewater bill, and $35 off a wastewater-only bill, for NTPUD residents who maintain their primary residence within the District.

“Lake Tahoe watercraft inspectors stopped golden mussels from entering Lake Tahoe earlier this week during an aquatic invasive species inspection at the station in Meyers, Calif,” a statement from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency said. “This is the second vessel intercepted at Lake Tahoe, and the first this season, with the highly invasive mollusk onboard since the species was detected for the first time in North America in 2024 in the California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.”

Despite strong opposition from residents concerned about rising costs, the Donner Summit Public Utility District approved a new water and wastewater rate structure that will increase customer bills over the next five years.

The district initially postponed adopting the rates after receiving what appeared to be enough formal protests to potentially block the increases under California’s Proposition 218 process. An initial count showed 199 protests against the water rate increases and 201 protests against the wastewater rate increases.

High Fives Foundation, a Truckee based non-profit, announced its distribution of $500,500 in grants across North America to support athletes recovering from life-changing injuries.

Through its Empowerment Fund 2026 Grant Cycle 1, the non profit awarded 123 total grants. The cycle aims to represent the organization’s continued commitment to helping individuals rebuild, rediscover, and return to the sports and lives they love. The grants supported 61 new athletes and 62 returning athletes as they progress through their recovery journeys.
