I have spent a lot of my free time in the last month experimenting with slipcases and decoration. Best decoration has been the result of brass finishing tools I received from and I was happy with this subtle decoration on my Ted Chiang’s Stories of Your Life slipcase.

Hand-drawn lettering has yielded mixed results so I think I may have to invest in some brass type and a type setter, or just have to have custom dyes made. (K)

We have received the mock-ups from the bindery and they look great! Still need the dust jacket but for the actual book itself we are going for something elegant and refined.

The canapetta book cloth is gorgeous but it is very difficult to stamp on (it’s a challenge to get crisp edges when the material is so textured), so there may be some changes with the stamp but I think the trouble is worth it for such a gorgeous cloth. There will be no fancy stamping on this edition. Instead the design is much more subtle. Not sure we want to give anything away just yet, but keep an eye out for the use of the color red in the page design.

Today I finished a rebind for my personal library: Marguerite Yourcenar's The Abyss. Found this reading copy years ago where the text block was almost falling out, no dust jacket, and the cloth and endpapers were this god-awful brown. So I tore it down, painstakingly removed all the old glue, repaired the pages, sewed it back up, and bound it in black Euro-library buckram.

I just started experimenting with the application of foil by hand but that did not work really well (either due to the foil or the buckram--not sure which yet) so I designed and printed the label for the spine. Now it sits alongside the Memoirs of Hadrian, Yourcenar's other classic (which is also in need of an upgrade from the modern library edition). If you look you will also see the 1926 Grosset and Dunlap Lolly Willowes next to it on the shelf which Dymaxion Press will be printing later this year.

Next up: Calvino's Castle of Crossed Destinies which I picked up years ago without a dust jacket and had damage to the corners and spine, and the casing was a bit loose. Calvino is one of my all-time favorites and I am desperate for fine press editions of all his works. I have this gorgeous Franco Maria Ricci edition that features the first half of the edition I am rebinding.

This edition of Lolly Willowes truly exemplifies what we are trying to achieve here at Dymaxion Press. This book is an important work in feminist literature, and has become a cult classic in its own right, but has little of the mainstream recognition it deserves, despite being a bestseller upon its initial release and even the very first Book of the Month selection in the United States. In addition, it hasn’t had an adequate edition since the 1926 Grosset and Dunlap version. Our aim is for this edition to satisfy those who are already ardent fans and to introduce this classic to first-time readers.

“London life was very full and exciting [...] But in London there would be no greenhouse with a glossy tank, and no apple-room, and no potting-shed, earthy and warm, with bunches of poppy heads hanging from the ceiling, and sunflower seeds in a wooden box, and bulbs in thick paper bags, and hanks of tarred string, and lavender drying on a tea-tray.” — Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner

"'Come here, my bird! I will give you the dangerous black night to stretch your wings in, and poisonous berries to feed on, and a nest made of bones and thorns, perched high up in danger where no can climb to it.' That's why we become witches: to show our scorn of pretending life's a safe business, to satisfy our passion for adventure."
