As the Program Director of The Drive Tucson, there are moments that feel bigger than anything we do on the air…and this is one of them. Bobby’s Garden, named for my dad, Bobby Gentry, is part of the garden campus next to Mansfeld Middle School (my dad also attended there), where students don’t just learn… they grow, harvest, cook, and share what they create. I have to say, the garden is absolutely beautiful.
This is exactly how my dad lived his life. He was a master gardener, loved to work (worked for TEP for almost 50 years) a teacher at heart, and an incredible cook, someone who believed in planting something, nurturing it, and then bringing people together around it.
Ray Flores and his family have long supported this program and helped connect the vision and now the site includes a full culinary kitchen where students can take what they grow and turn it into real meals, completing that garden-to-table experience.
Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. is the largest donor to the garden with $1 million donated to restore the bungalows, which are named the Sprouts House Culinary Bungalows. They are situated near Mountain Avenue just west of Mansfeld. It is a beautiful property.
What’s happening here goes way beyond a garden. Through the University of Arizona School Garden Workshop and the Sprouts House campus, kids are learning life skills, how to grow their own food, how to work together, how to understand nutrition and how to create something from start to finish that they can be proud of. There are even plans for students to help run produce sales and work with what they grow, building confidence and real-world experience.
That’s why this is so meaningful to me… because it’s not just named after my dad, it reflects him. Planting, growing, harvesting, sharing… that was his life. And once again, the people of Tucson showed up to make sure that way of living continues on through the next generation.
Please take a look at this great story BizTucson did on my dad and Bobby’s Garden, it truly means a lot.
