(Special tribute below)
Legendary performer Ozzy Osbourne has passed away at age 76.

I know what you're thinking…The Drive Tucson doesn’t play Ozzy Osbourne. And you’re right. We don’t. But that doesn’t mean Ozzy didn’t play a big role in my life.

Matt Gentry here, Program Director at The Drive Tucson and long before I ever cracked a mic on the radio, I was just a 13-year-old kid trying to survive military school. By the time I came home to Tucson that summer, my dad drove me straight to Zips Records & Tapes on Speedway and I bought my own copy. First record I ever bought with my own money. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Ozzy’s music got me through some of the roughest years of my life, and probably helped get me kicked out of military school😂😂There’s just something about his voice…tortured, unpolished, fearless, that felt like it understood me when nothing else did.

If you’re older, think about when John Denver passed. It wasn’t just sad, it felt like losing a piece of your own past. That’s what this feels like. The music is still there, but the voice behind it is gone.

He wasn’t some polished, radio-friendly act. He was messy, human, loud, brilliant. Born into poverty in Birmingham, England, he didn’t take the easy road. He was the road.

I remember my dad telling me, “Just wait until all the celebrities you grew up with start dying off, life becomes viewed through a different lens…with every one.”

So no, The Drive Tucson doesn’t play Ozzy. But this programmer sure did. On cassette. On vinyl. In my car. In my room. In the background of life’s hardest and loudest moments. Musically speaking, Ozzy has always been one of my first loves.

So here’s to the madman, the legend, the little boy from Birmingham who never stopped screaming into the dark… and somehow helped all of us feel a little less alone in it.

Rest easy, Ozzy. And thank you.

Malcolm‑Jamal Warner, beloved Theo on The Cosby Show, has died at 54 after drowning while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. A gifted actor, musician, and advocate, he lit up screens for four decades—from sitcoms and dramas to Grammy-winning spoken word. He also used his voice to uplift others, co-hosting a podcast on Black identity and mental health. Warner was a private, grounded man who leaves behind a loving wife and daughter.

Well-Known Locals Launch New Radio Station Targeting In-Car Listeners

Hall of fame radio personality Bobby Rich, legacy station manager Jim Arnold and local downtown champion Fletcher McCusker have joined forces to launch a new Tucson owned-and-operated commercial radio station in Tucson at 101.7FM and AM830

The trio of well-known Tucsonans recently acquired the stations and have converted to an original format of music and local, live personalities.

Branded as The DRIVE, KDRI Tucson originates 24/7 broadcasting from Scott and Broadway downtown. The station is designed to appeal to baby boomers whose radio options have become overlooked and underserved by local radio. With a catalogue of over 2,000 songs, the distinctive presentation is unlike anything in the region and maybe in the country.

Listeners can hear the KDRI-AM830 signal while driving from the Mexican border to Phoenix. The DRIVE 101.7-FM signal can be heard all over the Tucson valley, allowing for frequent road reports and local information. The music will be familiar without playing the same 40 songs over and over, and you’ll connect with local, live DJs.
