🎙️ The best marketing doesn't create trust—it reveals it.

One of the things I appreciated most during my conversation with Jennifer from PlumbZona on The Marketing Corner was how genuine she was from the very first phone call.

No sales pitch.
No buzzwords.
Just honest conversation.

That authenticity carries over into how PlumbZona serves its customers.

Jennifer explained that when homeowners call a plumber, they're usually already dealing with a stressful situation—a leak, a clog, or something that simply isn't working the way it should. The last thing they need is someone trying to take advantage of that moment.

Instead, PlumbZona focuses on education.

Since their technicians are already on-site, they'll take a look at the overall plumbing system, identify potential concerns—especially issues common in Tucson's hard water—and simply let homeowners know what they find.

No pressure.
No scare tactics.
Just honest information so you can make the decision that's right for your home.

It's a great reminder that the businesses that earn lasting trust aren't always the ones with the loudest advertising—they're the ones that consistently put people first.

🎙️ "Your business license is just as important as your marketing."

That was one of my favorite moments from my conversation with Jennifer of PlumbZona on The Marketing Corner.

Like many entrepreneurs, Jennifer admitted she started out thinking she could wear every hat in the business—including marketing. After spending countless hours trying to do it all herself, she realized something many business owners eventually discover:

"I'm a really good plumber... and I'm really bad at social media."

Even more importantly, she shared a lesson that every entrepreneur needs to hear:

When business slows down, don't pull back on your marketing—lean into it.

Too many businesses budget for equipment, insurance, payroll, and inventory... but treat marketing like an afterthought. The reality is that even the best products and services can't help people if they don't know you exist.

Jennifer also shared another key to PlumbZona's success: customer service. Listening first, educating customers, and giving homeowners the knowledge they need—even before a repair begins—has helped build the trust their company is known for today.

If you're a business owner, this episode is packed with practical advice you can apply immediately.

Followers are not credentials. Age isn’t experience. Marketing is still a profession.

Lately, I’ve seen a growing number of posts and ads promoting twenty-somethings as social media managers for small businesses, almost as though being young is itself a qualification.

It isn’t.

Knowing how to use Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Canva, or the latest trend does not automatically mean someone understands marketing strategy, customer behavior, positioning, branding, lead generation, campaign planning, or how to connect content to actual business goals.

That distinction matters.

Too many social media agencies lean heavily on the idea that younger automatically means more relevant, more creative, or more capable online.

But small business owners should be asking much more important questions:
Where does the real marketing experience come in?
Who understands how to identify the right audience?
Who knows how to build trust over time?
Who can create messaging that supports sales, reputation, retention, and long-term growth?
Who knows the difference between content that gets attention and marketing that gets results?

This is 𝗡𝗢𝗧 an argument against young professionals. Talented people exist at every age.

It is an argument against treating youth, platform familiarity, or trend awareness as a substitute for training, judgment, reliability, and proven marketing experience.

I half-joke that I’m 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙪𝙮 in Tucson who actually has a marketing degree—along with decades of hands-on marketing experience. But behind the joke is a serious point: small businesses deserve more than someone who simply knows how to post.

They deserve someone who understands why the post exists, who it is meant to reach, what action it should inspire, and how it fits into a larger strategy.

Before hiring a social media manager, ask about more than age, trends, and follower counts.

Ask about strategy.
Ask about experience.
Ask about business results.
Ask whether they understand marketing—or whether they simply understand social media.

Your business deserves the difference.

Expertise matters. More than ever.

During a recent episode of The Marketing Corner, my guest Mo Rousso made a point that every business owner should hear before investing in coaching or consulting.

Today, almost anyone can call themselves a business coach, executive coach, or leadership coach.

The barrier to entry is incredibly low.

But here's the question we asked on the show:

Would you hire a football coach for the University of Arizona just because someone said they were a coach?

Of course not.

You'd want to know their experience. Their track record. Their credentials. The teams they've led. The results they've produced.

So why should hiring a business coach be any different?

Whether you're looking for a coach, consultant, marketer, accountant, attorney, or any other trusted advisor, don't stop at the sales pitch.

Ask questions.

What have they actually accomplished?
Who have they helped?
What experience are they bringing to the table?
Can they demonstrate real-world results?

Titles are easy to claim.

Experience is earned.

As entrepreneurs, we're making investments that directly impact our businesses, our employees, and our families. We owe it to ourselves to do our homework before placing our trust in someone else's advice.

🎙️ Mo and I had an outstanding conversation about business coaching, leadership, and why credentials and real-world experience still matter. Catch the full episode of The Marketing Corner and let me know your thoughts.

Have you ever hired someone based on their title, only to realize later they weren't as qualified as you thought? What did you learn from the experience?

07/18/2026

The best business coaches don't just teach success—they've survived failure.

One of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with Mo Rousso on The Marketing Corner was this simple question:

How do you know if you're hiring the right business coach?

Too often, entrepreneurs are drawn in by polished websites, flashy social media, and big promises. But before you hire anyone to help lead your business, ask yourself:

What have they actually built?

Mo's resume speaks for itself. A University of Arizona engineering graduate, he started, scaled, and successfully exited six businesses in the energy industry. Along the way, he helped raise $125 million in project financing, launched an energy analytics software company, and learned countless lessons through experience—not just theory.

What I appreciated most was his honesty.

He didn't become a coach because he had all the answers. He became one because he wanted to help other entrepreneurs avoid the mistakes, setbacks, and expensive lessons he experienced while building his own companies.

He also made another point that really resonated with me: credible coaching requires investment. It isn't something you earn by printing a certificate from the internet. The best coaches continue investing in themselves, their education, and proven methodologies because they know their clients deserve that level of commitment.

Here's my advice:

Before you hire a business coach, ask about their experience. Ask what businesses they've built. Ask what failures they've learned from. Ask what they've invested in to become better at their craft.

Your business deserves guidance from someone who's walked the road—not just someone who's read the map.

🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate 250 years of American independence—a milestone made possible not just by history, but by generations of people who believed they could build something better.

As a small business owner, I’m reminded every day that our communities don’t become stronger by accident. They become stronger because local entrepreneurs take risks, neighbors support one another, ideas are shared openly, and people are willing to work together—even when they don’t always agree.

One of America’s greatest strengths has never been that we all think alike. It’s that we’ve always made room for new ideas, different perspectives, and determined people who believe they can leave their corner of the world better than they found it.

Every small business creates jobs. Every customer supports a dream. Every conversation has the potential to spark an idea that changes a life, a family, or a community.

This Independence Day, let’s remember that our voices matter. Your ideas matter. Your integrity matters. And the way we choose to serve our communities matters.

Here’s to building businesses that don’t just create profits—but create opportunities, relationships, and a stronger future for everyone around us.

Happy Fourth of July. Let’s keep building something worth celebrating.

I'm going to say something that may not be popular, but it needs to be said.

Recently, I've watched business owners use tactics that have nothing to do with serving customers better. I've seen competitors call the health department on fellow restaurant owners—not because of a genuine public safety concern, but simply to create problems. I've also seen businesses manipulate online reputations with false reviews.

Here's the question every business owner should ask:

𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨?

Competition is healthy. It should inspire us to improve, innovate, and provide better service—not tear someone else down.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻'𝘀. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

If you're spending more time trying to hurt a competitor than improve your own business, you've lost sight of what entrepreneurship is really about.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁. 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

At CMG, we believe success should never come at the expense of someone else's integrity or livelihood. There is plenty of opportunity for businesses willing to earn it honestly.

Choose 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘀. Choose integrity over manipulation. Choose legacy over temporary wins.

Because your name is your brand, and every decision either strengthens it or weakens it.

Do better. Your community—and your future business—will thank you for it.

You may need to have a seat before reading this.

Nobody is coming to save your business.

Not the economy.
Not the algorithm.
Not your competitors.
Not your friends.

The day you realize it's all on you is the day you become dangerous.

Read that again.

The most successful entrepreneurs I've met stopped waiting for permission.

They stopped waiting for perfect timing.

They stopped waiting for someone to hand them an opportunity.

They built it themselves.

The responsibility is heavy.

But so is the reward.

💬 What was the moment you realized nobody was coming—and that it was up to you?
