Congratulations to the Tucson Police SWAT Team on its 50th anniversary!

The TPD SWAT team is a highly skilled and multi-faceted unit that consistently performs at a high level, with hundreds of deployments each year.

The men and women who make up the team hold themselves to an incredibly high standard, while innovating new solutions to tactical situations.

It’s always impressive to watch and photograph them as they handle complex law enforcement situations in Tucson and the surrounding areas.

This is a throwback to 2012 from my ride-along with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s High Impact Offender Program (HIOP.)

That night undercover PCSD deputies tracked the movement of a habitual offender and witnessed the vehicle making a drug exchange in a grocery story parking lot.

Marked units followed the vehicle pulled over the suspect based on a traffic violation and found even more crimes.

The driver had a suspended license and all passengers were told to exit the vehicle because it was going to be towed for a mandatory 30 day impound (the law at the time.)

The driver and passengers had drug paraphernalia under where they were sitting, and a syringe had fallen out of the driver’s shorts during the search which he attempted to conceal and destroy by stepping on it.

The female passenger became irate, started making a scene when she was being arrested.

Deputies told her that taking contraband into the jail was an additional charge and she confessed that she had and 1/8 ounce of m**hamphetamine inside of her, in her crotch area.

A female deputy responded and unfortunately had to remove the baggie full of m**h from the woman’s private areas.

Swift Water Rescue at Fort Lowell/Country Club.

Tucson Fire Department was able to use their engine to pull the person from the vehicle.

Despite the rescue, people continue to drive through the wash with water rushing over the hood of their vehicles.

There are several other simultaneous rescues happening around the city.

400+ ROUNDS FIRED AT SWAT
On March 10, 2024 Tucson Police Department officers located a felony domestic violence suspect and attempted to stop him for questioning.

38-Year-Old Jesus Mendivil went into a home near Dodge & Fort Lowell and barricaded himself inside with several weapons.

Several hours of negotiations were unsuccessful and the suspect shot at SWAT officers.

Over 400 rounds were fired by the suspect but none was wounded.

Several SWAT officers were pinned down by the gunfire and had to utilize directed fire in order to move to a safe position.

TPD SWAT armored vehicles were struck several times by the suspects gunfire.

PCSD SWAT and Arizona DPS SWAT were also called into assist.

Mendivil shot two SWAT Robots and a Drone during the incident.

Arizona DPS used their armored tractor called “The Rook” to take down the wall, allowing officers to see the suspect.

They were able to find Mendivil with an AR-15 rifle and a handgun held to his head. He ultimately took his own life.
