Tonight on Locals Only, KXCI welcomes Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet to the airwaves! Get ready for a live performance and interview in KXCI’s Studio 2A at 9 pm. Tune in at 91.3 FM or livestream the performance.

Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet

Originally the brainchild of Keaton Wilson (keys, synthesizer), the Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet features Trey Bryant (saxophone), Zach White (percussion), and Patrick Morris (bass) playing a mixture of original works as well as “non-standard” standards by the modern new guard (e.g. Robert Glasper, Dave Holland, and Kenny Garrett). The Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet aims to transcend one’s understanding of jazz via a diverse sonic palette and an exploration of the shared characteristics of jazz in neighboring genres.

Tell 'em Marty Kool sent you!

They say, "The early bird gets the worm." But what happens to the early worm? There are two sides to every story, different sides to every coin, it's too hot, it's too cold. Worms should get up late. I should be playing some Blues. And I will, come Saturday 5-9 PM (MST) at 91.3 FM, KXCI Community Radio, streaming live planet-wide from www.kxci.org. Come join me for new music by Sean McDonald, Bob Stroger & The Headcutters, Catfish Keith, Ryan Lee Crosby, Altered Five Blues Band, Kyle Rowland and Hudspeth & Taylor. From 8-9 PM I'll be remembering my brother, Michael, with music we listened to in the old days including Fred McDowell, Paul Butterfield, Super Session, Cold Blood, Savoy Brown, Otis Spann, Earl Ho**er and more. Along the way we'll hear Chris James and Patrick Rynn, Kurt Crandall, The Hollywood Blue Flames, Bob Corritore with Clarence Edwards, Bill Stuve, Marcia Ball, Big Joe Maher, Demetria Taylor, Johnny Burgin, Johnny Shines, Willie Buck with Bob Corritore, Jimi Primetime Smith, Albert King, Carey Bell & Eddy Clearwater, Lurrie Bell, Smokey Wilson with The William Clarke Band, Barkin' Bill Smith, a couple piano tunes from Jimmy McCracklin and Ken Saydak, and we'll head back to the 1950s with Slim Harpo, Lightnin' Slim, Willie Nix, Sonny Boy Williamson #1, Papa Lightfoot and more. New stuff, old stuff and lotsa Blues stuff for your listening pleasure.

💿 This week’s new music feature comes from local Waila group Vavages Family Band who just released their debut album titled A Family Tribute. The album honors the Vavages family’s decades-long, multi-generational musical roots in the Tohono O’odham Nation. The release is dedicated to members of the family that have passed on including drummer Lucius Vavages aka Uncle Lou. Uncle Lou plays on two songs on the record that were both recorded at KXCI’s Sonic Solstice 2024.

Please enjoy a taste of the album’s opener, “The Lou Cumbia,” which was written in memory of Uncle Lou.🌶️ Shoutout to Lady T. and the whole Vavages crew! This is Vavages Family Band, your new music feature on KXCI Tucson. .on.air ✨ 🪗 🌵
