An amazing and courageous lady is with her Savior after an intense battle with cancer.
Shannyn Caldwell went to be with Jesus yesterday morning.
I was beyond blessed to call her a co-worker, and unbelievably privileged to call her friend. She had a contagious joy and an unshakeable faith, and throughout months of brutal treatments and devastating doctor visits where the news became progressively worse, she maintained that God is SO GOOD. His love for her was never a question in her mind, and even as she felt her strength dwindling, she wrote, "Lord, if the only thing you ever do for me is what you've already done, it's more than enough. You saved me. My soul is settled. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you."
As she took her final breath early this morning, I'm sure satan thought he won.
But here is where he messed up...
Shannyn is a warrior, a daughter of Zion, a princess of the Most High. Were there a modern-day Bible, she would be in it, with her Job-like faith, Ruth-like resilience and Esther-like courage. Most of her life was an uphill battle, but she fought with dignity, grace, and an innate understanding that there was purpose in the struggle. When she was first diagnosed, we designed a shirt together to raise money for her forthcoming medical journey, declaring her a SURVIVOR.
I can imagine satan is convinced that he proved that to be wrong, when he will, in fact, learn what kind of survivor Shannyn is. I firmly believe that as long as people walk this earth, someone somewhere will still be speaking her powerful testimony, moving others toward the hope of Christ. Someone in the fight for their own life will bow their head and pray for the strength she displayed in her final months. Someone will clasp the hand of another who is fast losing their will to go on and whisper, "Let me encourage you with the story of a special woman who found herself in similar circumstances."
Shannyn Caldwell's name is going to torment the enemy until the very day he is thrown into the pit of hell for good. THAT is how she survives. And I pray that she took her last breath with all of the confidence that truth carries and ran to her Savior to hear the words, "Well done, My good and faithful servant."
For now, though, those of us who love her deeply grieve. We mourn the temporary dimming of her life light. We pray for her loved ones as they navigate this terrible loss.
We rejoice, though, in knowing she is free of pain, and she is wrapped tightly in the arms of the One she loved most.
