FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS CUP THE MIC
Tips for Artists - How You Hold Your Mic Affects Your Sound
Ever noticed how your voice sounds different depending on how you hold your mic? It's not just in your head—it’s science! The way you grip your mic changes how it picks up sound, which can make a big difference during live performances or recordings.
TL:DR Don't cup the mic! It makes you sound terrible, yes it will make you louder, but at the cost of your sound, ability to be understood, and probably the audio equipment.
Here’s a quick breakdown to keep your sound clean and clear:
1. Holding the Mic Properly (Near the Bottom)
- This is the ideal grip! It keeps your voice natural with minimal changes to the sound.
- Small ripples in sound may happen above 3kHz, but they’re usually not noticeable.
2. Gripping Higher Up (Near the Mic Head)
- Holding the mic closer to the top causes slightly more sound changes.
- You might notice some subtle differences, but nothing too major.
3. Blocking the Mic’s Head with Your Fingers (Partial Cover)
- This is where things start to get messy! It can create resonances around 2kHz and above 6kHz, making your voice sound uneven or “muddy.”
4. Cupping the Mic (Covering the Head Completely)
- Don’t do this! It creates major sound issues by adding strange echoes and feedback, especially if you’re performing with speakers.
- Your voice will sound distorted, and it could even mess with the PA system.
Takeaway for Artists
Your mic grip matters more than you think! Hold the mic near the bottom for the cleanest sound. Avoid covering or cupping the mic head to keep your performance sounding professional.
