The calm in the chaos.

Anyone with kids knows that All is Calm usually only lasts for a few minutes at a time before some new crisis arises. But those quiet moments are certainly blissful while they last! May your Christmas Day be full of peaceful moments among the chaos and may you have a very happy and Merry Christmas!

It’s hard to believe motherhood has only been a part of my life for 6 years out of the 32 I’ve spent on earth. Once you’re responsible for another human being, it becomes so incredibly important and even all-consuming. Motherhood changes everything and many people will caution you to be careful not to “lose yourself” and make your children your entire personality. And while it’s important to make time for things you enjoy as an individual person, I’ve found such incredible joy in making time for the things that make you thrive as a family.

I was never an outdoorsy person until I had three boys who truly need to be outside and experience nature. Figuring out the best way to raise these unique human beings has stretched my limits, shown me new ways of experiencing joy through my children, and inspired me to create opportunities for us to experience the world together.

Here’s to all the moms who continually challenge themselves and make sacrifices for their beloved children as they create a life that allows everyone to grow and thrive!

What are your reasons for getting outside?

When I first started the 1000 hours outside challenge, my main motivation was to get my (then) two energetic boys out of my house and give them a safe space to be loud and rough. As the saying goes “If they’re bouncing off the walls, just remove the walls”. Of course there are lots of ways that being outside is good for you, from sunshine to fresh air to forest bathing and so on, but at the time I was mostly interested in protecting my sanity.

Now on our third year of attempting 1KHO, while we haven’t yet actually reached 1000, we’ve increased our outdoor time each year and I’ve found more and more reasons to spend the majority of our days outdoors. This year, I’m focusing on exploring more of our local forest preserves and hiking trails, giving the kids (and me) a chance to increase our stamina and practice the skills we will use on our bigger outdoor exploration trips!

A small little bridge on the hike to the Never Summer ranch inside Rocky Mountain National Park crosses over the trickle of a stream that turns into the Colorado River. That same river flows throughout the United States and eventually makes it way down to the next National Park we are going to be visiting, the Grand Canyon.

There’s something supernaturally funny in the fact that I, a self-titled “indoor cat” for most of my younger years, would end up with three boys and a husband who can’t get enough of the wide open world. God gives us what we need, not what we want, and I’ve never been more grateful for a family that pushes me to discover new and amazing things every day.
