I never set out to make a documentary. But Dennis Leoni’s story landed in my lap and I couldn’t walk away.

I had never heard of him. I didn’t know how a young Latino from Tucson moved to LA with no connections and built a career through pure talent, hard work, and just being the nicest guy… eventually creating a ground breaking TV Show.

It’s the kind of story I wish I had known in film school. Proof that it’s possible. And what makes it even better is how he spends his career lifting up others, giving Latino creators and women in the industry a chance, a real shot. Which is what we all want.

Thankful this opportunity came my way, and grateful for the awesome crew helping bring this story to life.

Elephant Scout Road Trip!
We spent a week in LA listening to stories, memories, and wisdom from the people who know Dennis Leoni best.

Long days, a few surprise cameos, and more than one emotional moment. (Tears were shed!) Couldn’t ask for a better crew or a better story to tell.

From living rooms to the LATC, every interview revealed more of the man behind Resurrection Blvd and his fight to tell authentic Latino stories when no one else was.

Muchas Gracias to the Latino Theatre Company for allowing us to film in the Lupe Ontiveros Theatre!

This journey is as much about the present as it is the past. And it’s just getting started.

Dolores del Río broke new ground as one of Hollywood's first Latina stars who consistently rejected stereotypical roles. She became a Hollywood star through films like Ramona and Flying Down to Rio during the 1920s and 30s but chose to return to Mexico when Hollywood denied her proper roles. She gained iconic status during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema through her leading role in María Candelaria which became the first Latin American film to receive recognition at Cannes. Through her legacy Latina actresses received opportunities that demonstrated talent and determination can defeat obstacles.
