Nellie Bly’s story was never going to stay confined.

Not behind the locked doors of Blackwell’s Island.

Not inside the four-minute episode we originally planned.

Last Wednesday, we premiered the trailer for what we thought would be the next episode of Fragments.

Then four minutes became ten.

The characters grew stronger. The relationships deepened. The music rose. And the story kept pushing against the walls until the episode could no longer contain it.

Now, Inside the Madhouse (1887) has become a nearly half-hour independent short film.

Inspired by Nellie Bly’s extraordinary undercover investigation, the film follows her into a place built to silence women, where she expected to uncover inhumanity but never expected the humanity she would find.

Roughly 18 minutes are already complete, and the film is moving into its final stretch.

Nellie’s story would not be held down.

So we made a bigger film.

🤖 “AI isn’t real filmmaking.”

And yet every one of those innovations expanded the language of cinema.

They didn’t replace great storytelling. They gave storytellers new ways to tell it.

The camera didn’t end theater.
Sound didn’t end silent artistry.
Color didn’t end black-and-white.
Home video didn’t end movie theaters.
Smartphones didn’t end professional filmmaking.

Each breakthrough made filmmaking available to more people, unlocked new genres, and inspired artists to discover possibilities no one had imagined before.

The tools evolve.

The stories endure.

It wasn’t ink on paper, faded photographs, or old engravings.

It was real people. Love. Sacrifice. Discovery. Tragedy.

For centuries, we’ve preserved those stories in books and illustrations because that’s all we could do.

Now, for the first time, we can begin stepping back into them.

Generative AI gives educators, historians, museums, filmmakers, and students new ways to transform archival images into immersive experiences that spark curiosity and deepen understanding.

The goal isn’t to rewrite history.

It’s to remember that the people who lived it were every bit as real as we are.

Perhaps the best way to teach history… is to let people experience it.

The Graves family is going to México.

Agnes packed the luggage. Walter packed his optimism. Tabitha packed her curiosity. Kenny, unfortunately, packed his ability to turn into a grackle at the worst possible moment.

When a family vacation goes sideways in Guadalajara and Lake Chapala, the Graves must follow a trail of birds, legends, and the challenges of being a foreigner in another land, hoping to find their missing shapeshifter son before México decides to adopt him.
