If you have Netflix, I highly recommend "Nonnas," a heartfelt story about food, family, & love. Particularly meaningful to me: many scenes were shot at the now closed Spirito's in Elizabeth, NJ, a restaurant my grandparents introduced me to as a kid. To look back at the trajectory of that broken teacup, butter dish and soup tureen is to look at the evolution of not just the way we eat, but the way we live. The way families acquired fancy dishes and the way in which they are now shedding them act as a cultural X-ray, revealing the hidden anatomy of how families bonded, how communities formed, the things we valued and the values we choose to impart.

A family’s set of dishes has passed through five generations of women, but will the teacups, plates and bowls make it to a sixth?

For the 13th year in a row, Family Legacy Video, Inc. was selected to create the lion's share of the videos shown during the American Mining Hall of Fame banquet, sponsored by the the Mining and Minerals Education Foundation. I'm grateful to MMEF Executive Director Tom Aldrich (on the right side of the sign) and the Hall of Fame Committee for once again giving me the opportunity to tell the stories of the various mining luminaries honored during the December 7 event.

In the past week I've sent notes of condolences to the relatives of two family storytellers who recently left this mortal coil. I'm always saddened when a storyteller passes, but thankful that they entrusted Family Legacy Video® to help them preserve, celebrate, and share their life stories and values in a personal legacy video. They may have passed, but their stories will live on to inform and inspire their families now and for generations to come. When a loved one passes, it's always very sad. But, if they pass without preserving their life stories, that's tragic.

The Family Legacy Video crew recently traveled to Superior, Arizona, to interview Mayor Mila Besich for the Mining and Minerals Education Foundation. We wound up shooting in the old high school building, which offered a great view of the historic mining town. Family Legacy Video Marks 21 Years

I brought Family Legacy Video, Inc. into being on August 4, 2003.

During the twenty-one years since, a multitude of clients has entrusted me to help them preserve, celebrate, and share their life stories and values through custom legacy videos (also known as legacy films).

I feel this is sacred work, and I am truly grateful to all of the clients and storytellers who have made it possible for me both to serve them and to pursue my passion and my calling.

My wife and I recently returned from visiting family on the east coast.

The third day of our trip turned into a family reunion, as four generations gathered at my mother's home to celebrate my youngest brother's birthday.

The house was filled to bursting with my mother (who is now a great-grandmother), nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters, uncles, and aunts - all enjoying each other's company, and relishing this all too rare opportunity to gather in one place at the same time.

At one point, I stepped back and observed the happy scene. As I did, a feeling of calm, combined with deep satisfaction and gratitude, filled my heart.

During these fraught times, as I've experienced anxiety about the state of our politics and public discourse, seeing my family move into the future with love and mutual support brought me much needed hope and joy.

I wish the same hope and joy for you and yours.
