Bright, curious, and surprisingly adaptable, the Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana) has learned to make new homes as forests disappear. Today, you can spot them in conifer forests, farmland, open fields, and even the desert.

“I saw this male Western Bluebird at Lakeside Park. I’ve also seen flocks of them there during the winter months,” says photographer Leslie Leathers.

Their predators include hawks, raccoons, cats, and even possums.
