Everyone talks about how affordable Chiang Mai Thailand 🇹🇭 is for retirees and digital nomads, and honestly, they’re not wrong. However, nobody really talks about the unexpected costs that can happen while living abroad.

During our 27-day stay in Chiang Mai, routine medical screenings uncovered some issues that required additional testing, scans, and medication. That turned our “cheap Thailand month” into something very different. 💰💰💰

We arrived in Riga, Latvia 🇱🇻 on Tuesday, and it rained almost every day. However, we were able to take a walk before the rain came, and snapped some photos of the old city around us. All the buildings seem to have a lot of stories to tell. We find them very interesting and beautiful. 😍

**Tips for Tivat airport in Montenegro** 🇲🇪

Check-in: Starts 2 hours before departure time, there are screens showing which desk to go to.

Security Screening: Need to take your laptops out, no need to take off shoes.

Cafe & Lounge: It has a good sized cafe before security and a small convenience store. After you past passport control, there is a small business lounge that allows Priority Pass holders to have some drinks, snacks and take a rest. If you don’t have a Priority Pass or not flying business class, the cost is €8 if the lounge is not crowded.

It’s small, but efficient. Hope this helps. 😊

P.S. If you need a taxi, let us know, and we can recommend the driver we used from and to the airport. He’s very professional, friendly, and punctual. He’s also fluent in English. 🚕👍

And honestly, that’s what made Chiang Mai stand out to us the most. Not because it was perfect, but because life there felt manageable, comfortable, and surprisingly easy to settle into.

We recently experience a SCARE with our ATM card in Tivat, Montenegro.

Last Saturday morning, we went to the local ATM outside of a bank to get some cash for an excursion that day. When we put the card in and entered the PIN, the machine all of a sudden froze. None of the buttons worked, and our card was stuck in it. Being on a Saturday, the bank was closed, and we thought we had lost the card forever. Luckily we stayed with the machine, and a couple of minutes later it reset itself, and we were able to cancel the transaction and got our card out.

Since that experience, I have noticed that most ATMs have a RFID scanner that you can scan your card. I have tried that in the US at Bank of America last year, but it didn't work for me, so I never tried it again. However, today, we tried to use it at another bank ATM by our condo, and it worked perfectly. No more fear to get our card stuck in the machine, and the transaction was very smooth.

So here are some tips we have for using ATMs overseas:
1) Always use an ATM attached to a bank during working hours, just in case you need help. If your card got stuck, wait at the machine for a few minutes to see if it will reset itself and let you cancel the transaction and get your card back.
2) Look for the RFID scanner, and try to use that first before stick your card into the machine.
3) DO NOT ACCEPT the local bank's conversion, let your own bank do the conversion, you will get a better rate.

We absolutely LOVE our time here in Montenegro 🇲🇪! It’s an amazingly beautiful country. Especially when we took the cable car to the top of the mountain ⛰️. We were in awe of the stunning scenery! Just like a perfect postcard 🤩.

Chiang Mai didn’t surprise us with activities or landmarks, it surprised us with how it felt to be there.

After spending a month in the city, what stood out most wasn’t a single moment, it was the overall vibe.

☺️ Calm.
🐌 Slow.
❤️ Strangely easy to settle into.

We took a boat tour around the Bay of Kotor to the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, then we disembarked, and walked around Kotor Old Town.

The scenery in Montenegro 🇲🇪 is so beautiful. It’s like a fairy tale picture book everywhere we looked. 🤩

We found another fabulous place for breakfast on our morning walk along the waterfront today.😄

€10 for the breakfast buffet, which includes eggs several different styles along with different meats, cheeses, vegetables, pastries, breads, desserts, juices, coffees and water. A great value sitting right next to the Adriatic Sea. 😍✨
